Some of the Mackay region’s most resourceful businesses have been recognised at the 2021 Resource Industry Network (RIN) Awards.

Resource Industry Network chair David Hartigan said the awards night (Friday, May 21) was a huge success, with more than 300 in attendance at the MECC to celebrate the people, the innovation, and the successes of the resource services sector.

This year, the RIN Awards included a special segment that saw 10 individuals acknowledged as part of Resource Industry Network’s 20-year anniversary.

Resource centre hosts manufacturing hub

Mackay's Resource Centre of Excellence in Paget has been earmarked to host one of two new Regional Manufacturing Hubs for Queensland.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the locations of the two newest hubs in Mackay and on the Gold Coast, meeting a $15.5 million election commitment.

Regional Manufacturing Hubs provide local manufacturers with expert advice and support as they look to grow their business and expand into new markets and create secure, long term local jobs.

Conference promises tools to take safety to next level

Fostering personal ownership to take safety beyond compliance will be a major focus of a conference in Mackay this month.

The Resource Industry Network's 2021 Safety Conference promises to deliver practical tools and information pertinent to workplace safety while sharing expertise to delegates on how to put their new knowledge into action in their own workplaces.

This year’s event, March 25 and 26, carries the theme “Safety Evolution: From compliance to ‘my’ safety ownership”.

Suppliers urged to speak up on ‘anti-resources activism’

The Queensland Resources Council is urging businesses supplying the mining sector to have their say in an inquiry into the impact of recent banking and insurance policy changes on export industries.

The QRC plans to highlight the impact of ‘anti-resources activism’ on the ability of some businesses to renew insurance policies and their ability to access finance.

This will be part of its submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth inquiry.

Nominations open for key Mackay industry awards

METS sector companies across the Mackay region are encouraged to nominate for the upcoming 2021 Resource Industry Network (RIN) Awards.

Nominations officially opened this week (February 22) and RIN is urging businesses to take the time to prepare their nominations for the categories on offer.

RIN general manager Dean Kirkwood says this year’s event is even more reason to celebrate given the challenges businesses have faced with COVID-19, and the economic contribution the sector has made to the state and national economies as a result.

Kirkwood officially named in RIN leadership role

Dean Kirkwood has been appointed general manager for Resource Industry Network and is due to officially start in the role in early November.

Mr Kirkwood started with the organisation last year as the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday METS SME Export Hub manager.

He took on the acting general manager role after Adrienne Rourke resigned in May after six years as RIN general manager.

RIN chair David Hartigan said Mr Kirkwood had a strong background in the resources sector and was well known among the industry in the region.

Milestone for Mackay-based export hub

Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia Keith Pitt has officially opened the Mackay, Isaac, Whitsunday METS SME Export Hub.

Part of Resource Industry Network, the hub was established last year as a result of funding from the Australian Government’s SME Export Hub Initiative, the Queensland Government, and the Local Buying Foundation.

It is tasked with identifying, establishing, and driving opportunities in the export space for businesses in the MIW region, according to Export Hub manager Dean Kirkwood.

Courses to sharpen up METS growth potential

Mackay's Resource Industry Network is seeking businesses to participate in its 2020 Regional Accelerator program and Export Ready Course, both starting in August.

The two programs are designed to further develop METS products or services, as well as ready businesses for the export market.

RIN says the courses complement each other in that they cater to a variety of businesses regardless of what stage they are in the development process.

Heavy-hitting project list for online industry forum

Resources Centre of Excellence ready to roll

The $7 million Mackay Resources Centre of Excellence is on track for its planned official opening next month.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick today inspected the finishing touches at the centre, jointly funded by the State Government and Mackay Regional Council.

He said the facility would ensure the Mackay region remained one of the world’s best sources for mining expertise and innovation in the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector.

Adrienne Rourke has resigned as general manager of the Resource Industry Network after six years in the role.

Building contract awarded for mining support hub

Mackay construction company Fergus Builders has been awarded the contract to build the $7 million Resources Centre of Excellence.

The $3.28 million contract includes construction of an administration building, workshop, laboratory, landscaping and utilities.

The next stage of development will include fit-out of an underground mining simulator.

Assistant Minister for State Development and Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the awarding of the tender to Fergus Builders was a major step forward in the delivery of the centre.

Resource group ready for another Mackay rally

Mackay’s Resource Industry Network plans to rally the region again next weekend, hot on the heels of another State approvals setback for the Carmichael coal project.

Network names new board members

The Mackay-based Resource Industry Network has announced two new appointments to its board.

Hastings Deering Central Queensland area manager, Daniel Vero, and Vayeron commercial manager, Mark Walter, have both been appointed to the board as member directors.

Mr Vero (pictured) has held the positions of Mackay area manager and Central Queensland area manager for Hastings Deering for the past five years with area responsibilities including Mackay, Rockhampton, Emerald and Gladstone business units.
