Blue Energy in hydrogen deal to fuel mine fleet

Stanmore’s Isaac Plains mining fleet at Moranbah may be running on hydrogen in future through a deal with gas proponent Blue Energy.

Blue Energy has executed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Stanmore Resources to supply hydrogen from future pilot production activities in its ATP 814 tenement in the Bowen Basin.

It follows an earlier deal between the parties to capture and market mine gas from Stanmore’s proposed Isaac Plains underground operation adjacent to Blue's ATP814. . .

Gladstone refinery in $1.2m hydrogen study

Rio Tinto will look into using renewable hydrogen to power a key process at its Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone in a $1.2 million study.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will contribute up to $579,786 towards the feasibility study.

Conventional alumina refining combusts natural gas to achieve the high temperatures necessary in the calcination process.

Rio Tinto will investigate the technical implications of displacing that natural gas with renewable hydrogen at the Yarwun plant.

One aspect of the study will see the company simulate the calcination process using a lab scale reactor at its Bundoora Technical Development. . .

CQ site earmarked for major hydrogen plant

Stanwell has secured land for its proposed 3000MW green hydrogen electrolysis facility at Aldoga, 20km west of Gladstone.

The publicly-owned generator is partnering with Japanese industrial heavyweight Iwatani Corporation for the project, tipped to create more than 5,000 jobs for regional Queenslanders.

Stanwell acting chief executive officer Adam Aspinall said signing an option agreement with Economic Development Queensland to secure land for the green hydrogen production facility was an exciting step towards the proposal becoming a reality.

Cost-competitive green hydrogen on near horizon

Green hydrogen is already approaching cost competitiveness for heavy trucking, buses and remote power, with the potential to become commercially viable across further sectors of transportation as early as 2030, a new study shows.

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation commissioned the Australian Hydrogen Market Study, which was prepared by global energy analysts Advisian (part of the Worley Group).

It looked into the competitiveness of green hydrogen across 25 Australian industry sectors over three timeframes (2020, 2030 and 2050) compared with incumbent energy technologies in Australia .

Consortium explores wastewater hydrogen scheme

Townsville City Council has reached a deal with a local consortium to look into hydrogen production at the Mount St John wastewater treatment plant site.

The licence agreement will allow Townsville Hydrogen to begin a feasibility study on producing green hydrogen using wastewater at the site.

It follows a tender released to the market last month seeking proposals from parties interested in the production of hydrogen.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the initial licence agreement would allow council and the proponents to confidently come to an arrangement for a longer-term lease with the aim of ensuring the preferred tenderer. . .

Backing for Gladstone, Toowoomba hydrogen clusters

Queensland is establishing two further hydrogen clusters in Gladstone and Toowoomba as the state positions itself as a hydrogen technology leader.

The State Government has committed $100,000 through a partnership with NERA (National Energy Resources Australia) to establish the new clusters, which will work with the established H2Q cluster in Brisbane.

Hydrogen Minister Mick de Brenni said the State Government would provide Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) and Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) with $50,000 each to progress their cluster strategies.

Pure Hydrogen in deal for refuelling outlets

Pure Hydrogen Corporation has taken another step towards developing a major hydrogen network with a deal to help set up refuelling hubs on the East Coast of Australia.

The company has executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with H2H Energy, which has agreed to supply and maintain refuelling outlets on a number of Pure Hydrogen’s proposed sites.

Among their refuelling solutions, is H2H Energy’s Gateway Refueller (below), a Queensland- designed and manufactured mobile hydrogen refueller with 18 months of field proven performance.

QEM backs solar, wind studies to advance green hydrogen plan

QEM is pushing ahead with a green hydrogen proposal for its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project, engaging specialists to look into potential wind and solar power generation at the site.

DNV Australia has been engaged to undertake a pre-feasibility study into power generation from solar and wind farms, as part of the broader assessment into hydrogen production at the flagship project in North West Queensland.

QEM previously announced it had commissioned studies with E2C Advisory to investigate the capital and operating cost requirements of the company . . .

QEM to pursue hydrogen strategy at Julia Creek

QEM is looking into green hydrogen opportunities at its flagship Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project in North-West Queensland.

The company said it would investigate the financial and regulatory requirements to produce hydrogen using a “green” solar-powered electrolyser.

It expected that the hydrogen would initially be used as a support to the energy needs of other resources projects located in the North West Minerals Province, but ultimately for the hydrogeneration of its own raw oil into transport fuels, QEM said.

It has appointed E2C Advisory to assist in its. . .

Eco-friendly route to ammonia production

Australian chemical engineers have found a way to make ‘green’ ammonia from air, water and renewable electricity - while avoiding the need for high temperatures, high pressure and major infrastructure.

They believe the new production method has the potential to play a role in the global transition towards a hydrogen economy, where ammonia is increasingly seen as a solution to the problem of storing and transporting hydrogen energy.

Their work is outline in a paper published in Energy and Environmental Science.
