Bill paves way for hydrogen industry growth

The Queensland Parliament has passed legislation to help drive hydrogen industry development by setting the framework for the transportation of this and other renewable gases.

The Gas Supply and Other Legislation (Hydrogen Industry Development) Amendment Bill 2023 helps unlock an estimated 10,000 jobs and $33 billion in economic activity by 2040, according to Resources Minister Scott Stewart.

Fortescue deal boosts Bulli Creek energy plans

Fortescue Metals Group has signed up to draw energy from Genex Power's Bulli Creek solar and battery development to help power its Gibson Island project in Brisbane.

The 25-year solar power purchase agreement will secure 337.5 MW of the energy generated from the first stage (proposed at 450MW) of the project.

Genex is developing the Bulli Creek renewable energy project about 100km south-west of Toowoomba in partnership with J-POWER.

Bid for hydrogen grants to kickstart growth

The North Queensland Hydrogen Consortium and its foundation partners are seeking federal funding for a raft of initiatives to kickstart investment in the Townsville industry.

They have submitted grant applications under the “Activating a Regional Hydrogen Industry – Clean Hydrogen Industrial Hubs” scheme.

A key item on the wish list is backing for a North Queensland Hydrogen Industry Master Plan, aimed at mapping out key infrastructure to develop a hydrogen economy in the region and connect wind and solar resources to the national grid as planned by the CopperString transmission network.

Edify Energy in hydrogen export MoU

Townsville’s bid to become a hydrogen powerhouse has been strengthened with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to look into exports through the city’s port.

Edify Energy joins a list of proponents lining up to export renewable hydrogen through the Port of Townsville, including Origin Energy and Ark Energy Corporation.

Hydrogen to power Emerald Coaches fleet

Central Queensland's Emerald Coaches is targeting zero-emissions with a $100 million plan to introduce hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to their fleet from next year.

The regional transport operator said its diesel-powered vehicles currently used more than a million litres of fuel every year, producing 3100 tonnes of greenhouse emissions.

Under the e-Mission Zero project, it plans to replace the entire fleet with hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles producing zero emissions by 2040.

Green hydrogen will be produced at Emerald Coaches using rainwater captured onsite with a renewable poweredelectrolyser generating hydrogen.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has hailed Queensland's potential as a clean energy superpower based on renewables above the ground and critical minerals below the ground in her 2021 State of the State address.

Call for Net Zero Fund to fire up hydrogen sector

A hydrogen industry peak group is calling for the Federal Government to create a $19 billion Net Zero Fund to back developments including hydrogen applications in the refining industry and heavy vehicle fleets.

The Australian Hydrogen Council released its white paper today, saying Australia urgently needed a national approach to creating a viable hydrogen energy industry.

The paper sets out recommendations for actions to help Australia achieve net zero emissions with the assistance of the emerging hydrogen industry.

Green light for Edify hydrogen facility

Townsville City Council has formally approved the first development application over land within the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct, paving the way for an Edify Energy hydrogen plant.

Edify proposes to build and operate an up to 1 GW green hydrogen production plant as well as a behind-the-meter solar photovoltaic and battery storage facility at the precinct. 

Edify’s initial plans involve generating green hydrogen from a pilot scale facility of 10 megawatts and increasing capacity in stages to meet the needs of a growing domestic and export green hydrogen market.

Boost for Stanwell hydrogen export plans

Queensland generator Stanwell and Japan’s largest hydrogen supplier, Iwatani Corporation, will conduct a $10.4 million feasibility study into the development of a large-scale renewable hydrogen facility in Gladstone.

ARENA is providing up to $2.17 million towards the study - which has also drawn support from a broader consortium of Japanese and domestic partners.

These include Kansai Electric Power Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and APA Group, as well as funding from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Federal funds boost CQU hydrogen work

CQUniversity has secured $2.1 million in Commonwealth funding to research and develop applications for Central Queensland’s burgeoning regional hydrogen industry.

Funded through the Government’s Regional Research Collaboration (RRC) Program, the project will see CQUniversity collaborate with industry to determine research and innovations required to drive the adoption of green hydrogen for export in Gladstone and to develop the zero emissions technologies required by industry.

It will complement related CQUniversity work including the planned Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Precinct at the University’s Gladstone Marina Campus.

Export agreement for refinery hydrogen venture

North Queensland is a step closer to shipping thousands of tonnes of renewable hydrogen to South Korea after an agreement between Port of Townsville and Ark Energy.

A feasibility study will investigate the development of a renewable hydrogen facility at the Sun Metals zinc refinery in Townsville along with hydrogen export facilities at the port.

Ark Energy is an Australian subsidiary of refinery owner Korea Zinc, formed with a mandate to decarbonise the group's energy supply starting with Sun Metals Corporation.

Hydrogen plans for Gladstone alumina refinery

Rio Tinto and Sumitomo Corporation will team up to look into the potential construction of a hydrogen pilot plant at the Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone.

If the project proceeds, the pilot plant would produce hydrogen for the recently announced Gladstone Hydrogen Ecosystem.

MOU on Hay Point hydrogen exports

Key players have signed a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for a hydrogen export facility at the Port of Hay Point, south of Mackay.

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation joined Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure, Brookfield, and international trading company ITOCHU Corporation in the MOU.

It will allow for work to start on concepts to build a renewable hydrogen production, storage, and export facility within the Hay Point port precinct.

Online supplier portal for hydrogen sector

Power generator CS Energy and Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise have launched an initiative to increase local participation in the hydrogen industry.

The six month project will map and uncover the capability and potential of local businesses to support a hydrogen supply chain, creating a new online supplier portal.

State signs up for ‘renewable’ hydrogen certification

The Queensland Government is partnering with the Smart Energy Council’s zero-carbon certification scheme for hydrogen in a move it says will step up the state's credentials as a leading generator of renewable energy jobs.

Hyzon Motors has signed a deal to deliver five hydrogen trucks to Ark Energy for use by sister company Townsville Logistics in road train configurations.
