Clean Teq wins contract for $2m CQ water project

Mackay Regional Council has awarded a tender for design and construction of the new Koumala Water Treatment Plant to Clean Teq Water.

It is a $2 million project, with the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program contributing $801,767.94.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the new water treatment plant would help reduce the hardness of the water supply for the community, south of sarina.

“Data shows that while Koumala treated water is of acceptable quality from a health perspective, the water is higher in hardness than is ideal,” he said.

Clean TeQ to manage $2m water plant upgrade

Clean TeQ has won a contract valued at more than $2 million to upgrade a bore water treatment plant at Koumala, near Mackay.

Clean TeQ will design, supply, and install an ion exchange treatment plant plus a package gas chlorination system to remove hardness and lower the salinity of an existing bore water supply.

The project, for Mackay Regional Council, is intended to reduce the scaling of pipes and improve taste for use in the potable water supply of Koumala.

Council gets the ball rolling on community hub

Mackay Regional Council is seeking community input during the planning and design of a $25-$30 million Northern Beaches Community Hub.

The council has purchased a 3.7ha site between Rosewood Drive and Eimeo Rd, opposite Northern Beaches High School, for the signature project.

A concept master plan has also been prepared to help guide staged development of the site.

As part of the next stage of planning, the council is calling for nominations for community members to join a reference group for the project.

Council shortlists ‘top-notch’ waterfront submissions

A 4.5-star corporate hotel and luxury residential properties are among the proposals spurred by a Mackay Waterfront Expression of Interest (EOI) tender.

Mackay Regional Council received seven submissions and has shortlisted two companies to proceed to the next stage of consultation.

They include Brisbane-based Sentinel Group Holding and local consortium ReNew Mackay.

Project proves glass shines as road material

A trial project which saw recycled glass bottles and jars from Mackay households used in road rehabilitation has been hailed a success.

Mackay Regional Council supplied 320 tonnes of crushed glass from its materials recovery facility.

This was mixed with gravel to regrade and top up the 1.3km of road from the Peak Downs Highway to the Hogan’s Pocket landfill site.

Mackay infrastructure focus in COVID-19 recovery

Mackay Regional Council will pump more than $100 million into capital works projects in the coming financial year.

Mayor Greg Williamson said spending on infrastructure and initiatives like the Invest Mackay Events and Conference Attraction program would help stimulate the economy during the COVID-19 recovery.

The 2020-2021 budget includes $7.6 million to progress signature projects – the Mountain Biking Strategy, Northern Beaches Community Hub and the Mackay Waterfront PDA.

Mackay Regional Council is taking the city's waterfront revamp to the next level with a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for development projects on six freehold sites.

The projects within the Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area (PDA) should support CBD revitalisation and proposed public realm upgrades nearby.

Mayor Greg Williamson said calling for expressions of interest was an opportunity to test the market appetite for development through private investment.

Mackay business support measures revealed

Mackay Regional Council has detailed stage one of business support measures to help assist those impacted by the escalating COVID-19 crisis.

It says it will bring forward maintenance and capital projects and initiatives from 2020-2021 to the next three months to increase local employment and contract opportunities.

The measures also include waiving a raft of fees for 2020-2021 and a focus on local spend and job creation measures immediately and during the recovery.

The due date for the
next lot of rates in September will also be extended by three months.

International honours for Mackay region water

Water from the Mackay region has claimed a silver medal at international tasting titles over the weekend.

The water from the Marian treatment plant received just one vote less than the top drop at the 30th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting in West Virginia yesterday.

Named Ixom Best Tasting Water in Australia last year, the Marian mouthful was competing against waters from around the globe in the Municipal Water (tap water) category of the event.

Mackay applies waste glass to road repairs

Mackay Regional Council is trialing the use of glass from residents’ recycling bins for road rehabilitation work.

About 320 tonnes of crushed glass from the council’s Materials Recovery Facility has been mixed with gravel.

That
recycled product has been used to regrade and top up the road from the Peak
Downs Highway to the Hogan’s Pocket Landfill site.

Cr Karen May said this is the first time council had used crushed glass in a road rehabilitation project.

Mackay Waterfront vision unveiled

Mackay Regional Council has released a draft master plan setting out a vision for the Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area and its five precincts.

Those precincts are City Centre, Riverside,
Enterprise, Queens Park and Beachside.

New resource partnership for Mackay region

The Queensland Resources Council has announced a new partnership with local councils to help ensure Mackay region receives a fair share of economic benefits from the mining sector.

The QRC signed the agreement with the Greater Whitsunday Council of Mayors.

Mackay earmarks $116m for capital works projects

A $14 million water recycling plant is among the big ticket items covered by $116 million in capital works spending in Mackay Regional Council's 2019/20 Budget.

The allocation includes $72 million for renewing existing assets, $15 million for upgrades and $29 million for new assets.

Mackay Regional Council has the green light for a proposed development scheme to revitalise the city centre and waterfront area.

State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Cameron Dick has approved the council’s proposed Mackay Waterfront PDA Development Scheme.

CQ councils shine in Queensland water awards

A low-cost sewer monitoring device has placed Mackay Regional Council among the 2018 Queensland Water Award winners.

The council took the Program Innovation Award (under 250,000 end users) for its MiSewer program.

MiSewer obtains real-time data on sewer networks and alerts crews to potential blockages and capacity issues, allowing them to act before an overflow occurs.
