Mackay Regional Council is trialing the use of glass from residents’ recycling bins for road rehabilitation work.

About 320 tonnes of crushed glass from the council’s Materials Recovery Facility has been mixed with gravel.

That recycled product has been used to regrade and top up the road from the Peak Downs Highway to the Hogan’s Pocket Landfill site.

Cr Karen May said this is the first time council had used crushed glass in a road rehabilitation project.

If successful, the council will consider using it in other road maintenance projects.

“This is a fantastic out-of-the-box initiative taken by our Waste Services team,” Cr May said.

The council believes it has saved about three per cent of the project cost by reusing its glass.

The road was completed two weeks ago and has held up well in recent wet weather.

In 2018-19, council received 2623 tonnes of glass at its Materials Recovery Facility.

It was successfully crushed and reused in local and commercial projects, including drainage backfill, sand replacement under concrete and in line marking paint.
