Townsville firms build Defence work capability

Thirteen Townsville businesses are among 45 statewide to share in more than $515,000 to help build Defence and aerospace manufacturing capability.

The Townsville small-to-medium businesses have received a collective $130,000 in funding through round two of the Queensland Government’s $1.5 million Defence and Aerospace Industry Development Fund.

Local Townsville business specialising in military and tactical gear, Krieger Industries, has secured more than $16,000 to upgrade its quality management systems to demonstrate how it can provide products and services meeting international requirements.

Krieger Industries director Stewart Locke said the funding would help the business. . .

More contracts roll out for Shoalwater Bay work

The latest clutch of contract wins has been announced for upgrades at Shoalwater Bay Defence facilities, bringing more than $53 million in work.

The additional subcontracts have been awarded for major construction works to be completed under the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA) Facilities Project.

The government says they have gone to companies either located in Central Queensland, or who will deliver the majority of their work from Central Queensland, including:

  • $24 million in work awarded to locally owned and family run earthmoving and civil contracting company Bellequip for construction works;

Watpac to lead $155m Cairns Defence works

Defence has engaged Watpac Construction as managing contractor for a $155 million upgrade at HMAS Cairns.

Designs will be finalised around July 2022 for the NCIS-8A HMAS Cairns Building and Maritime Works package.

On-site construction is set to commence in September 2022 and be completed by December 2024.

The $155 million investment will support the new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels.

Design tenders open for Greenvale ASMTI work

CPB Contractors is advancing the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) facilities project at Greenvale, with tender submissions open for design consultants.

CPB Contractors was appointed managing contractor for the major Defence initiative late last year.

The project’s construction workforce is expected to peak at 350 workers, as part of the Greenvale Training Area’s major works.

Design work for the Greenvale site will commence in the coming months and construction will start in mid-2022. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.

CPB Contractors to lead Greenvale ASMTI works

CPB Contractors has been appointed to deliver the first phase of works for a new Defence training area near Greenvale, with hundreds of jobs expected to flow.

Upon the successful completion of the development phase of the $23.5 million contract, CPB Contractors would then be engaged to deliver $800 million in facilities under the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI), the Federal Government said.

The project’s construction workforce is expected to peak at 350 workers, as part of the Greenvale Training Area’s major works.

Extra help for firms targeting Defence work

Changes to three grant programs will help small and medium businesses working in the Defence sector to access greater support from next month.

The Federal Government has announced changes to the co-contribution ratios in three Defence industry grant programs from November 12.

The co-contributions have been reduced from the existing 50:50 ratio, as follows:

  • New applicants for a Capability Improvement Grant or a Defence Global Competitiveness Grant will only be required to fund 20 per cent of the value of their eligible project; and
  • New applicants for a Sovereign Industrial Capability Priority. . .

Major shipbuilder Austal has made a deal to acquire BSE Maritime Solutions for $27.5 million.

BSE Maritime Solutions operates in Cairns and Brisbane as a leading ship repair and support business for defence, commercial, tourism, and luxury vessel customers.

Plan to boost Queensland military tech facilities

The State LNP plans to partner with Rheinmetall Defence Australia to build a new technology precinct at Redbank if it wins government.

The $135 million Land Systems Technology Precinct (LTSP) would be built by an LNP Government and leased back by Rheinmetall, it said.

The announcement came as the company's Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVEHCOE) was officially opened in Redbank.

Rheinmetall will use the MILVEHCOE facility to build and assemble the majority of Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles (pictured below), which are being delivered to the Australian Army under the $5 billion LAND 400 Phase. . .
