Mining towns COVID-19 safe and jobs ready

COVID-19 has shown up the strength of having mining communities.

There were dozens of hardrock mining towns in Queensland in the first decades of last century. Much of the recent demand for workers has been taken up by FIFO services.

Remaining mining towns can be named on one hand and include Mount Isa and Cloncurry.

Mount Isa Mayor Cr Danielle Slade won office last year on the eve of the pandemic last year.

Queensland faces three-day COVID lockdown

Brisbane is in a three-day lockdown in an effort to stop the spread of the highly contagious UK strain of COVID-19.

Until 6pm Monday, people in the local government areas of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands and Logan will be required to stay at home except:

  • to attend work if you can’t work from home;
  • to buy essentials like groceries and medicine;
  • look after the vulnerable; and
  • exercise within their neighbourhood

Masks will also need to be worn everywhere in those local government areas except if people. . .

Mining union and owners find common ground

Politics makes for strange bedfellows. Pandemics, even stranger.

The miner’s union says the stakes are high and while the priority in 2020 was to make for safe workplaces, the struggle on-going will be for the coal mining industry itself.

In the first of a series of stories, Queensland State Secretary of the CFMEU mining division Steve Smythe states the mining industry had to reinvent itself last year.

The pandemic was only one of the fronts the industry faced said Mr Smythe.

Mining growth to lead recovery

Miners and the supply chain were expecting to increase staff numbers post COVID19.

The Queensland government was also called out for praise in its handling of the pandemic.

That's all in the new 'state of the sector' report released by the Queensland Resources Council.

A survey of the State’s top resource leaders in May found strong momentum towards employment growth over the next 12 months, said QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane.

Domestic tourism ad blitz

A new tourism campaign, Queensland - You’re Good to Go – is projected to deliver a $1 billion in overnight accommodation takings for hard hit tourism operators over the next four months.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk launched the campaign to encourage Queenslanders to go and explore their own state.

“In coming weeks, you’ll see our Queensland – You’re Good to Go campaign on television, in newspapers and across social media platforms showcasing the best of our state from Cape York to Coolangatta,” said Ms Palaszczuk.
