Flood study claims top Queensland engineering award

BMT and Aurecon’s Brisbane River Catchment Flood Study has won the RJ Hawken Award in a celebration of Queensland's top engineering projects. The 2018 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards (QEEA) were held at The Sofitel, Brisbane, on Tuesday night. Joining BMT and Aurecon to claim project excellence awards were: - Sunshine Coast University Hospital (Aurecon); - Sun and Salt: Logan’s Water Quality Solution (Logan Water Infrastructure Alliance, Logan City Council, Downer, Cardno, WSP); - Leica GS18T – World’s Fastest GNSS RTK Rover (Leica Geosystems); - Project Currawong ; and - Brisbane Airport Runway Stage 2 Overlay (GHD). Accepting the RJ Hawken Award, BMT software manager Bill Syme said it was nice after many years of flood studies to do a study of the magnitude and complexity of the Brisbane River Catchment Flood Study. "There’s a lot of technical challenges along the way… and to achieve the result that we achieved, we are very, very proud,” he said. The study followed a recommendation of the Queensland Flood Commission of Inquiry (QFCOI), established after widespread flooding in the Brisbane, Ipswich and the Brisbane River Valley areas in 2010 and 2011. Its outcomes included flood mapping and design flood levels to guide effective building controls and land use planning. Regional nominees in the 2018 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards included Amrun project Chith export facility (Rio Tinto, Bechtel, Jacobs, McConnell Dowell), Capricorn Copper refurbishment and restart project (Ausenco), Charters Towers Tennis Courts Upgrade (Langtree Consulting, Charters Towers Regional Council, Charter Towers Tennis Club) and Conergy Australia’s Lakeland solar and storage project. They were among 31 entries judged by a panel of 12 local practicing and retired engineers and fronted by Chief Judge, Cliff Button. Two Queensland engineers were also recognised for individual awards on the night, with Harry Asche taking out the State’s Engineer of the Year while Stuart Cook was awarded Young Engineer of the year. Dr Asche has spent more than 35 years in the design and construction of public sector infrastructure, with experience in road, rail, water and tunnel design and construction management. He is chair of the Queensland Chapter and vice-chair of the National Executive for the Australasian Tunnelling Society. Mr Cook is a principal engineer at BG&E and leads their Queensland Transport Business. At the age of 32, he led a team of 80 as design manager on the $400 million Ipswich Motorway Upgrade: Rocklea to Darra Project.
