CuString progressing connection talks with miner

CopperString 2.0 transmission network developers CuString say discussions are progressing positively with vanadium player QEM, heralding great opportunities for jobs and investment in the region. In a recent ASX announcement, QEM managing director Gavin Loyden said QEM was making substantial progress in efficiently developing both the Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project and the associated renewable power generation potential. He told iQ Industry Queensland this week QEM was in discussions with power industry players to establish a 1GW green energy hub at Julia Creek that could feed into the CopperString transmission line and power other nearby projects as well as potentially providing a cheap energy source for QEM. CuString managing director Joseph O’Brien said major renewable energy and critical mineral developments in North Queensland would be supported by CopperString, being made more reliable and affordable by connecting to the national electricity grid near Townsville. Related: Engineering work checked off as CopperString progresses “CuString is working with a range of industrial customers on their electricity needs to deliver their projects and create new jobs and opportunities for Queensland and we will continue to work with the Queensland and Australian Governments through bilateral assessment and approval processes for the transformative CopperString 2.0 network,” Mr O’Brien said. The recently released Queensland Resource Industry Development Plan reaffirmed “Government is committed to ensuring the industry policy, common user infrastructure, incentives and regulation exist to facilitate not only growth in new economy mineral exploration and extraction, but also expansion into value-adding industries across Queensland." Mr O'Brien said CuString also welcomed the Premier’s recent comments confirming the State Government's commitment to $16 million in development funding to support CopperString 2.0. The CopperString 2.0 project will link the North West Minerals Province to the national electricity grid through construction of a 1064km transmission line, seven substations, and up to 1910 towers. CuString last month said it was ready to move forward with the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract and lock in required construction resources for the $1.7 billion project. Mr O’Brien told the Developing Northern Australia forum in Mackay that CuString had completed the engineering work as part of the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process with its end-to-end infrastructure solutions providers the UGL / CPB Joint Venture (JV). The company has previously released ACIL Allen analysis indicating that connecting the North West Minerals Province to the east coast electricity grid would generate an extra $132 billion in mining activity by 2050.
