China Huaneng backs Qld carbon capture project

China Huaneng Group Clean Energy Research Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Glencore to work together on carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology, starting with a project at the Millmerran power station. Signing the MOU, both companies committed to supporting the deployment of low emissions technologies like CCUS to reduce greenhouse emissions from the use of fossil fuels and other industrial processes. Glencore's Carbon Capture Transport and Storage Company (CTSCo) aims to demonstrate CCUS on an industrialscale with its Milmerran project. The CTSCo project will use China Huaneng’s CO2 capture technology to capture a stream of CO2 which will then be transported and stored permanently in a non-potable aquifer at a depth of more than 2km. “This is the first integrated international carbon dioxide capture and storage project that China has participated in," China Huaneng Group Clean Energy Research Institute Co chairman Dr Li Weidong said. "Huaneng will work with Glencore to complete a high-quality carbon capture project in Australia's Surat Basin, build a high-quality cross-industry international cooperation project, help coal-fired power generation achieve 'near zero emissions', and enhance its international influence.” Related: Roadmap shines spotlight on carbon capture potential Glencore chief executive officer Ivan Glasenberg welcomed the ongoing collaboration with China Huaneng. “We are very pleased to strengthen our collaboration with China Huaneng on the CTSCo Project. This project is vitally important because it can scale up to support the reduction of Scope 3 emissions from the use of fossil fuels across a broad range of industrial sectors,” he said. Key funding and project participants include Glencore, China Huaneng, Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA), Australian National Low Emissions Coal Research and Development (ANLECR&D) and the Australian Government. Concerns over Arrow wells flare up again Meanwhile, The Courier Mail is reporting that legacy environmental concerns over Linc Energy’s underground coal gasification (UCG) operation in south-west Queensland are being aggravated by new activity. The paper says that a report by RDM Hydro, commissioned by the State Government, indicates that it is not conclusive that contaminants will not migrate from the affected site to new wells being developed by Arrow Energy. Arrow has sought approvals to expand the number if CSG wells at Hopeland near Chinchilla from six to 280 as part of its $10 billion Surat Gas Project. The actual Linc Energy UCG site is not part of the Arrow tenements and the company says it has been safely producing gas from a six-well pilot in the area since 2014.
