Thiess worker killed in Curragh coal mine accident

A man has been killed at the Curragh coal mine in Central Queensland in what a key mining union describes as a tragic start to 2020 for the industry. Mine owner Coronado Global this morning confirmed that an accident yesterday afternoon (January 12) fatally injured a Thiess employee at the site, north of Blackwater. Early reports from emergency services indicated the man, aged in his 30s, had been trapped in machinery. CFMEU Mining and Energy Queensland President Stephen Smyth said the whole mining community would be shocked and saddened by the news, which comes on the heels of five deaths in Queensland coal mines last year. The most recent was Ipswich man Brad Duxbury, 57, who was killed in an underground incident at the Carborough Downs mine on November 25. “Our hearts go out to family, friends and loved ones,” said Mr Smyth. “This is a terrible start to 2020. The industry must redouble efforts to end the tragic loss of life in our mines.” The union said its safety and health representatives were on site at Curragh and would conduct their own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatality. Coronado said operations at Curragh had been suspended until investigators permited them to resume. Workers were being progressively briefed on the incident as they arrived on site to commence their shifts and counselling services were being offered, the company said. "Coronado and Thiess extend their deepest sympathies to the family of the individual and all those affected by this tragic event," Coronado Global said in written statement today. Mines inspectors are onsite and have commenced their investigation into the incident.
