Watpac to lead $155m Cairns Defence works

Defence has engaged Watpac Construction as managing contractor for a $155 million upgrade at HMAS Cairns.

Designs will be finalised around July 2022 for the NCIS-8A HMAS Cairns Building and Maritime Works package.

On-site construction is set to commence in September 2022 and be completed by December 2024.

The $155 million investment will support the new Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels.

BESIX Watpac to build $94m innovation complex

BESIX Watpac has been appointed to build the $94 million Technology Innovation Complex (TIC) for James Cook University in Townsville.

Site preparations have already begun and construction is set to kick off next month.

The project is expected to directly create about 300 construction jobs and at least 80 per cent of subcontractors and suppliers are to be locally sourced.

The university says the four-storey, 9400sq m TIC will be the centrepiece of an innovation hub in which undergraduate and postgraduate engineering and IT students will work with industry partners and researchers.

Stadium work triumphs in NQ building awards

Watpac Construction has kicked goals at the Master Builders North Queensland Housing & Construction Awards for its work on Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

The stadium build took out the Project of the Year award, as well as Best Sporting Facilities and Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety.

The $318 million venue took over one million hours to complete, with more than 480 local businesses involved in the supply chain, and 135 indigenous jobs created.

Stadium seating rolls out as project powers ahead

The first of 25,000 seats has been installed as construction on Townsville's $290 million North Queensland Stadium project reaches its peak.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was joined by rugby league great Johnathan Thurston to mark the milestone, alongside Queensland Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni.

Managing contractor Watpac has engaged Camatic Seating to build the fit-for purpose seats.

The company has experience in supplying similar seating to major stadiums around the country like Robina, Rod Laver Arena and the MCG.

Watpac to build $30m Cairns Innovation Centre

Watpac has won a $24 million contract to deliver the James Cook University Cairns Innovation Centre.

The company said the project was expected to support a workforce of 75 people, with preference to be given to local suppliers and subcontractors wherever possible.

Works will start this month with an anticipated completion date of July 2020.

The $30 million Cairns Innovation Centre is funded by $10 million from the Australian Government and $10 million from the Queensland Government, with the balance contributed by JCU.

Qantas museum upgrade kicks off

Work has kicked off on Qantas Founders Museum’s $11.3 million Luminescent Longreach Stage 1: Airpark Roof Project.

Contractor Watpac has begun placing the footings for a 8072sq m roof structure, with this initial work expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The roof will cover the museum’s aircraft, including a Boeing 747, Boeing 707, Catalina Flying Boat and Super Constellation.

Once the footings are in place, prefabrication of the main structure of the roof will continue offsite so as to not disrupt the museum’s busier months of visitation from May to September 2019. . .
