Special status to drive battery metal plans forward

Queensland Pacific Metals' planned Townsville battery materials plant has won prescribed project status, as the company looks to begin construction as soon as 2022.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said the proposed Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) had the potential to provide a massive boost to Townsville and regional industry.

"The project will create around 800 construction jobs and its operational phase would create an estimated 1700 jobs, including 300 highly-skilled advanced manufacturing jobs at the facility and 1400 jobs in support industries," he said.

“Now that the prescribed project declaration has been made, the. . .

TECH plant gas deal to build green credentials

Queensland Pacific Metals has lined up a new Bowen Basin gas deal to feed its planned Townsville battery chemicals plant as it aims to become Australia’s first producer of 'net zero carbon' nickel.

An MOU with Transition Energy Corporation and North Queensland Gas Pipeline will see the parties work together on a gas field supply chain to QPM’s TECH (Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub) project.

Their plans involve draining and harvesting gas which would otherwise be flared or vented from operating mines in the northern Bowen Basin.

This would be transported to a new centralised gas processing and compression. . .

Push for City Deal cash for Lansdown precinct

The State Government and Townsville City Council are pushing for the Federal Government to back the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct with City Deal money.

Speaking in Townsville today, Deputy Premier and State Development Minister Steven Miles said it was the top priority for the $195 million in City Deal funds available.

“The precinct will be Australia’s first environmentally sustainable advanced manufacturing, processing and technology hub," he said.“It will kick-start a new age in industry that will create jobs and. . .

Townsville skills fit the bill for TECH jobs

Queensland Pacific Metals chief executive officer Stephen Grocott says former Queensland Nickel workers would have the skills to walk right into a job at the new TECH battery chemicals plant.

Townsville’s skilled workforce was among the city’s big selling points when it came to selecting a site for the plant, which will process nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia into product to feed the demand of major battery makers.

The company this week confirmed it was planning to upscale the TECH plant, and Dr Grocott said this was likely to increase the number of ongoing operational roles. . .

TECH developer confirms major plant expansion

Queensland Pacific Metals is doubling the scale of its planned Townsville battery chemicals plant, with construction due to start next year.

The company has formally committed to expanding the TECH project to process 1.2 - 1.5 million wet tpa ore, at least twice the capacity contemplated in the pre-feasibility study.

The plant will produce nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, high purity alumina and other by-products.

Queensland Pacific Metals has also produced an updated project schedule, with construction expected to start around April next year and firstproduction targeted for 2023. . .

Loan to accelerate TECH plant studies

TECH battery materials plant proponent Queensland Pacific Metals has secured a $1 million loan to advance technical work and start its definitive feasibility study.

The company is continuing pilot plant work in Perth to lay the groundwork for its planned manufacturing facility at Townsville's Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct.

The key battery chemicals to be produced by the TECH project are nickel sulfate and cobalt sulfate, to be extracted from ore imported from New Caledonia.

The company said Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP. . .

New supply deal for NQ battery materials plant

Pure Minerals has announced a deal to supply battery maker Samsung SDI with nickel products from its Townsville plant.

Samsung SDI is seeking to purchase up to 6000t per annum of contained nickel from the TECH (Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub) project.

Pure Minerals chief executive officer Stephen Grocott said the company was consistently gaining traction with end users who viewed it as a potential part of their supply chain.

The company last month announced that it was looking at scaling up the TECH plant after scoring a major deal with South Korean chemical company LG Chem.

Land deal sets scene for TECH plant progress

A planned $550 million-plus Townsville battery materials plant is a step closer with Queensland Pacific Metals formally securing the project site.

The company, a subsidiary of Pure Minerals, has entered into a binding reservation deed with Townsville City Council for the land in theLansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct.

“The reservation deed secures the TECH (Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub) project’s home at the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct," Pure Minerals chief executive officer Stephen Grocott said.

"We look forward to the TECH project becoming a cornerstone of this Townsville City Council initiative.

Korean deal may push up scale of Townsville plant

Pure Minerals is looking at scaling up its planned Townsville battery materials plant after scoring a major deal with South Korean chemical company LG Chem.

It says the move would bring economies of scale along with more jobs and other benefits for Townsville and the greater community.

LG Chem is seeking to buy up to 10,000 tonnes of contained nickel and about 1000 tonnes of contained cobalt from TECH (the Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub).

This would be as a combination of mixed hydroxide precipitate and final battery chemical sulfate forms.

That demand goes well beyond the output considered in. . .

TECH looks to ‘zero waste’ outcome for NQ plant

Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub proponents have entered a memorandum of understanding with James Cook University for work hoped to see the project become world's first 'zero waste' nickel /cobalt production facility.

Pure Minerals subsidiary Queensland Pacific Metals said the initial focus of the research program would be the leach residue produced at the planned battery chemicals plant.

The processing option being used for the TECH project was more sustainable than the traditional high pressure acid leach (HPAL) as it resulted in a much lower amount of residue, it said.

Another advantage is that the benign residue can be dry. . .

TECH proponent ready to kick off pilot plant work

Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub proponent Pure Minerals plans to begin producing battery materials from a pilot plant by the end of 2020.

Stage one pilot plant operations are set to commence in the last quarter of this year to produce a nickel-cobalt mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), aluminium hydroxide and saleable haematite.

Stage two piloting - scheduled for early 2021 - will refine the MHP to nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate and the aluminium hydroxide to 4N high purity alumina (HPA).

The pilot work will be carried out at the new ALS Global Hydrometallurgy Centre of Excellence in Perth with support from. . .

Sun Metals and TECH team up in iron oxide study

Townsville zinc refinery operator Sun Metals and the proponents of the planned TECH battery chemical plant will investigate the potential to sell a joint iron oxide product.

Pure Minerals' TECH (Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub) project is expected to produce 327,000 tonnes per annum of high-grade iron oxide (haematite) as a co-product of processing nickel laterite ore for battery materials.

Pure Minerals said the expansion currently under way at the Sun Metals refinery would also see it producing an iron oxide product.

Sun Metals has entered an MOU with Pure Minerals subsidiary Queensland Pacific Metals to assess the. . .

NQ project set to meet supercharged market

The electric vehicle battery market is being supercharged during the COVID-19 crisis, and a Townsville project is poised to make the most of the hot demand.

Newly appointed Pure Minerals chief executive officer Stephen Grocott said the company’s TECH battery chemicals project was well-placed to enter the fray.

It skipped the steps involved in getting a mining operation off the ground by tapping established ore sources in New Caledonia and drew on a supply and logistics chain already in place for the mothballed Queensland Nickel operation, he said.

“We can move quite quickly for what is a. . .
