Uplifting milestone for major Wilmar works

Wilmar Sugar has reached a major milestone in its $10.6 million Victoria Mill evaporator project, with the biggest component lifted safely into the factory.

It took a 400-tonne crane with a super-lift to shift the top cone and body of the new evaporator into place at the Ingham district mill.

Herbert regional operations manager Adam Douglas said the massive steel construction weighed 46 tonnes and measured 8m high and 8m wide.

Sugar Terminals Limited has appointed BESIX Watpac to deliver a $22 million project at its Townsville Bulk Sugar Terminal.

The company is replacing the roofs on Shed 1 and Shed 2 during 2021 and 2022.

The work is expected to kick off next month and will extend the life of the sugar export infrastructure in Townsville by at least 40 years.

Sugar scholarship on offer for engineering students

Applications open next month for a scholarship program offering engineering students a pathway into the sugar industry.

The Australian Sugar Industry Scholarship enables undergraduate engineering students in their final two years of study to gain valuable experience during three paid placements in the sugar milling industry.

The scholarship is sponsored by Sugar Research Institute (SRI) and Sugar Research Australia (SRA) and run in conjunction with Australia’s sugar milling companies.

Wilmar Sugar, the nation’s largest raw sugar manufacturer, has backed the scholarship since it began in 2016.

Townsville is next in line for a major reroofing project as Sugar Terminals Limited completes a $100 million capital program across its Queensland bulk sugar storage and export facilities.

Sheds 1 and 2 at STL's Townsville terminal are the last of the 12 sheds slated for roof sheeting replacement

Sugar high for contractors as 300m shed gets $12m revamp

Mackay-based firm V2R Projects is working with Sugar Terminals Limited on a $12 million overhaul on one of the giant sheds at Mackay sugar terminal.

The project is replacing 330 tonnes of roof sheeting at the terminal, to extend the life of Shed 1 by at least 40 years.

Wilmar’s emergency GPS technology a winner

Wilmar Sugar Australia is using GPS technology to help improve response times for emergency services. 

A recent mock railway incident in the Herbert region was the first opportunity to trial Wilmar’s new track layer over the Google Earth system. 

The initiative was well received by first-responders said Herbert Cane Supply Manager Jim Kirchner.

“Having our railway tracks on Google Earth allowed us to share the exact GPS coordinates with police, fire and ambulance for where the training incident happened," said Mr Kirchner.

Sugar giant opens 2020 graduate program

Wilmar Sugar Australia is seeking five engineering graduates to work across its four Queensland milling regions from next year.

Training and development manager Scott Young described it as a great opportunity for people about to finish their degree in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering to kick-start their career.

Wilmar Sugar Australia has launched the recruitment drive for its next intake of apprentices, with 33 new positions up for grabs.

Training and development manager Scott Young said applications were open for the 2020 apprenticeship intake at Wilmar’s eight sugar mills and Sarina BioEthanol Distillery.

“We’re offering apprenticeships across a range of trade disciplines – electrical, fitting and turning, boilermaking, and diesel fitting,” Mr Young said

State pledges funds to help seal Mackay Sugar deal

The Palaszczuk Government has pledged up to $14 million in the upcoming Budget towards securing an international investor in Mackay Sugar.

Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad said the support package would underpin a proposed $120 million investment into Mackay Sugar by Nordzucker, one of the leading sugar companies in Europe.

The move was about providing certainty to Mackay Sugar’s workforce, which reached almost 800 people in peak season, Ms Trad said.

Mossman Mill bailout

A bio-refinery is the central plank of a $25 million government bail-out for Mossman Mill.

The Government recognised the importance of the mill to the community and local economy and the substantial long-term benefits that would be derived from establishing a leading-edge bio-refinery on the site, Minister for State Development, Cameron Dick said.

MSF Sugar on track with $75m power plant

Construction of MSF Sugar’s $75 million Tableland Green Energy Power Plant is on track for a mid-2018 completion.

Activity so far in 2018 has included erection of a 38.35m chimney stack for the 24MW bagasse-fired plant.

Assembly of the plant's furnace chamber, cooling tower, steam transformer and the high and low-voltage electrical switchrooms was also completed in January.
