South32 Cannington mine

Cannington muscles up as growth paths advance

South32 has announced a 28 per cent increase in underground ore reserves at its Cannington silver-lead-zinc operation, extending the site's mine life by about two years to FY33.

The increase of 3 million tonnes brings total underground ore reserves to 13 million tonnes, supporting the continuation of one of the world's largest silver and lead producers into the next decade.

To support the extended mine life, South32 expects to invest additional capital expenditure of $US65-80 million ($91-$112 million) during FY27 and FY28, primarily for ventilation and electrical upgrades required to access deeper sections of. . .

Silver demand beats ‘two new Canningtons a year’

More than two new Cannington mines would have to be built each year to meet a forecast rise in silver demand out until 2040, major producer South32 says.

The company highlighted the surging demand and shortage of new operations to meet that demand in a presentation stemming from its pre-feasibility study (PFS) for development of the zinc-lead-silver Taylor Deposit at its Hermosa project in the USA.

“The project has the potential to sustainably produce the metals critical for a low-carbon future across multiple decades from different deposits," South32 chief executive officer Graham Kerr said.

Alliance spinning the bit again at Hamilton

AusQuest in alliance with Cannington mine owner South32 has started drilling at the Hamilton copper project in North-West Queensland.

They are targeting copper-gold mineralisation similar to the deposit supporting the Ernest Henry mining operation near Cloncurry.

The overall program will comprise four diamond drill-holes for about 2000m, with three holes designed to test discrete magnetic/gravity targets within a halo defined by earlier drilling.

AusQuest said the size of the alteration. . .

Cannington bus

Cannington bus on offer for community work

South32 Cannington is seeking expressions of interest from community groups in McKinlay or Cloncurry shires to put an old work bus to good use.

The 10-year-old Mitsubishi 25-seater was previously used to transport members of Cannington’s workforce from the mine’s accommodation village to operational areas.

The mine recently purchased a new bus, which opened up an opportunity to donate the retired vehicle, South32 Cannington vice-president operations Joe Russell said.

“We would love to see the bus go to a. . .

Researchers are tracking a hawksbill turtle nicknamed Cannington

Cannington’s ‘turtley’ awesome adventure

Researchers are tracking a hawksbill turtle nicknamed ‘Cannington' as miner South32 supports an initiative to help the endangered species.

South32 Cannington mine has teamed up with Reef HQ Volunteers Association, James Cook University researchers and the Queensland Government for the project.

A satellite tracking device was attached to the turtle in late January by researchers on Milman Island, a small sandy cay and important nesting area in the Great Barrier reef’s far north.

Tracking 'Cannington's' movements will provide new data and information to help inform future conservation measures for the species.

South32 coal expansion plans blocked

South32's planned $956 million project to extend the life of the Dendrobium coal mine in New South Wales has been blocked by that state's Independent Planning Commission.

CFMEU Mining and Energy has described the decision as a blow to South Coast mineworkers, and says it will consult with members and stakeholders about next steps.

“Dendrobium mine is a major employer and part of the lifeblood of our Southern District mining industry. It provides the coal for local steel production at Port Kembla," South West District vice-president Bob Timbs said.

“This expansion would secure 500. . .

South32 turns its back on Eagle Downs coal project

South32 has decided against going ahead with further development of the Eagle Downs metallurgical coal project near Moranbah.

The announcement follows completion of a feasibility study on the project last quarter.

"While the study indicated the potential for a long-life operation, the expected returns do not currently support the allocation of capital in accordance with our capital management framework," the company stated.

"The project has been placed on hold while the partners assess options that may include the divestment of our 50 per cent interest."

South32, which also owns the Cannington mine in North West Queensland, bought into Eagle. . .

South32 Cannington renews Fire sponsorship

South32 Cannington has renewed its sponsorship of JCU Townsville Fire for this season's Women’s National Basketball League championship.

The 2020 WNBL season gets under way on November 11, with JCU Townsville Fire tipping off against Perth Lynx in Mackay.

The season is following a revised format due to COVID-19, with all 60 games played during a six-week period entirely in North Queensland, giving local spectators a unique chance to witness the country’s best female basketball players in action.

Counting Cannington’s local contribution

South32 Cannington spent more than $2 million with local suppliers over the past year and has committed to do even more to increase local procurement and support local business where possible in the future.

South32 Cannington was proud to have to helped lend some support by spending $2.2 million with suppliers in McKinlay and Cloncurry shires during FY19/20, Cannington vice-president operations Joe Russell said.

“Across South32’s operations, we believe we have a responsibility to get behind our local communities," Mr Russell said.

Alliance partners agree to more work at Hamilton

South32 and AusQuest have agreed to further drilling at the Hamilton copper project, about 120km south of the world-class Cannington silver-lead mine.

AusQuest announced today it had completed assessment of assay results from a recent drilling program at Hamilton, which is subject to a StrategicAlliance Agreement (SAA) with South32.

It said key parameters (potassic and sericite alteration) for the location of iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation similar to the Ernest Henry deposit had been identified.

Magnetic targets closest to the strongest alteration were identified for further drilling.

AusQuest said it expected to have Native Title clearances for. . .

Eagle Downs decision due by end of 2020

Central Queensland should know the future of the Eagle Downs metallurgical coal project near Moranbah within three months.

In its quarterly report today South32 said it remained on-track to consider a final investment decision with its joint venture partner by the end of this calendar year.

Eagle Downs is a large metallurgical coal development project located about 25km south-east of  Moranbah and down dip of BMA’s Peak Downs mine.

The project was placed under care and maintenance in late 2015 after initial development work that delivered site infrastructure including water supply and high voltage systems, office. . .

Cannington production on an upward trajectory

South32 has lifted its production forecasts for Cannington this financial year as underground mining hits higher grades and the mill continues to perform well.

The guidance has lifted 10 per cent for payable zinc equivalent production in 2020/21, taking the expected output to 11.8Moz silver, 113.9kt for lead and 60.7kt for zinc.

The North-West Queensland site lifted its payable zinc equivalent production by 9 per cent in 2019/20.

Planned higher zinc grades more than offset lower silver and lead grades, and the operation drew down run of mine stocks to a normalised levelfollowing the. . .

Eagle Downs mine decision due within months

South32 says it remains on track to make a final investment decision on the Eagle Downs metallurgical coal project by the end of 2020.

In its quarterly report, released today, the company reported that it had completed coal quality drilling at Eagle Downs, 25km south-east of Moranbah.

Those results will be used to support the ongoing feasibility study.

Subject to the outcome of the feasibility study, South32 plans to construct an underground longwall mine, coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) and associated infrastructure.

South32 extends backing for exploration partnership

AusQuest and South32 are extending an alliance to continue developing high-potential exploration opportunities, including the Hamilton project in North West Queensland.

The companies initially entered their Strategic Alliance Agreement (SAA) in February 2017 and AusQuest announced today that it was set to be extended to December 2021.

Chief targets are copper, zinc and nickel projects in Australia and Peru.

Under the agreement, South32 funds work on exploration opportunities it accepts from AusQuest (which receives incentives for generating the oportunities).
