Ernest Henry to draw on $259m renewable energy project

APA Group will invest $259 million to build a 72MW solar farm and 52MW/104MWh battery energy storage system in Mount Isa, underpinned by a deal to supply Ernest Henry mining operations.

Construction of the Sybella Creek solar farm and BESS is expected to begin this year, with project completion planned by mid-2028.

APA Group announced a final investment decision on the project today.

The company said the related energy supply agreement (ESA) with Evolution Mining subsidiary Ernest Henry Mining ran until mid-2046.

Fortescue deal boosts Bulli Creek energy plans

Fortescue Metals Group has signed up to draw energy from Genex Power's Bulli Creek solar and battery development to help power its Gibson Island project in Brisbane.

The 25-year solar power purchase agreement will secure 337.5 MW of the energy generated from the first stage (proposed at 450MW) of the project.

Genex is developing the Bulli Creek renewable energy project about 100km south-west of Toowoomba in partnership with J-POWER.

MMG’s Dugald River mine will be first cab off the rank to draw power from a new 88MW solar farm that APA Group is building at Mica Creek, Mount Isa.

Approval for $550m CQ solar farm

Acciona Energia has received a key approval to take its $550 million Aldoga Solar Farm project near Gladstone forward.

The State Government has approved the application for a Material Change of Use for the solar PV farm and grid connection assets at the site.

Acciona said this approval covered the area approved for development two years ago and the expansion area surrounding the Larcom Creek Terminal Station.

It will enable Acciona to deliver a solar PV farm with a capacity of up to 600MWp, reduce civil construction costs, and optimise the levelised cost of electricity.

Hybrid solar battery project kicks off near Dalby

Fotowatio Renewable Ventures has started construction near Dalby on its first Australian hybrid solar battery project.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility will feature 2.4 MWac of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation panels and a 2.5 MWac/5 MWh energy storage system which, once completed, will be one of the first co-located PV and BESS system greenfield developments in Australia.

The plant’s output will be connected to Ergon’s distribution network, allowing the hybrid power plant to supply and take electricity from the grid and trade in the National Electricity Market.

Japanese companies invest in Queensland solar

Japan-based oil trader ENEOS Corporation will partner with Sojitz to build a large-scale solar power generation business in southwest Queensland.

ENEOS acquired 100 percent of the shares of Edenvale Solar Park Pty Ltd, which will operate the plant spread across 248 hectares, through Sapphire Energy Pty Ltd.

Sapphire Energy is a joint venture with another Japanese based company Sojitz Corporation which has other interests in Queensland.

Towers up for Columboola solar farm

Powerlink has finished building eight transmission towers to connect the new Columboola solar farm, north-east of Miles, to the grid.

Powerlink chief executive Paul Simshauser said the organisation was constructing 2km of transmission line and completing works at its Columboola substation as part of the renewable energy project.  

“Assembling the transmission towers was no easy feat, with each tower comprising 15 tonnes of steel atop 30 cubic metres of concrete foundations, extending up to six metres underground,” Mr Simshauser said.

QEM backs solar, wind studies to advance green hydrogen plan

QEM is pushing ahead with a green hydrogen proposal for its Julia Creek vanadium and oil shale project, engaging specialists to look into potential wind and solar power generation at the site.

DNV Australia has been engaged to undertake a pre-feasibility study into power generation from solar and wind farms, as part of the broader assessment into hydrogen production at the flagship project in North West Queensland.

Solar firm plans $500m CQ hydrogen project

International solar firm Eco Energy World has announced plans for a $500 million green hydrogen and solar PV development in Raglan near Gladstone.

EEW was already planning a 300MW solar farm at Raglan and now aims to combine the PV plant with a project to produce renewable energy for green hydrogen production, developing a 200MW hydrogen plant with a further 100MW allocated to energy storage.

The proposed hydrogen plant would produce 33,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year using electrolyser technology, the company said.

Ensham mine in solar farm proposal

Idemitsu Australia Resources has submitted a development application for a 90MW solar farm to power operations at the Ensham mine, outside Emerald.

The company said the proposed solar farm would be developed in three stages on land owned by Idemitsu adjacent to the coal mine.

The solar farm project would create up to 150 jobs during construction.

No final decision to proceed had been made at this time, Idemitsu said.

Renewables job bonanza up for grabs says solar group

Fast-tracking the transition to renewable energy could create an extra 22,000 construction and installation job years in Queensland by 2030 compared with business as usual, according to community group Solar Citizens.

X-ELIO is ready to begin construction of its $200 million Blue Grass Solar Farm from this month, creating up to 400 jobs.

Neoen has tied up the finances it needs to proceed with the Western Downs Green Power Hub, described as the largest solar farm in Australia.

The $600 million project near Chinchilla is expected to create more than 400 construction jobs.

QUT research adds shine to $600m energy project

Vast Solar has joined forces with the Queensland University of Technology to help optimise its planned $600 million clean energy project in Mount Isa.

The North West Queensland Hybrid Power Plant will use concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) technology based on mirrors. This will be integrated with a solar PV system, a large-scale battery and gas engines.

Vast Solar said the new plant’s performance would be affected by the cleanliness of the solar mirrors, and the selection of the plant materials.

Coal company signs up for renewable power supply

BHP has signed a deal that will see it meet half of the electricity needs across its Queensland coal mines from low-emissions sources, including solar and wind.

The company says the renewable power purchasing agreement will help it halve emissions from electricity use in its Queensland operations by 2025, based on FY2020 levels.

The agreement, with state-owned clean energy generator and retailer CleanCo, will run for five years from January , 2021.
