Upgrades to the Rockhampton Airport Terminal, including a new mezzanine floor and passenger lounges, are on track for completion next month.

The work is being undertaken thanks to $6.44 million from the State Government’s $200 million COVID Works for Queensland program.

Acting Premier and Minister for Local Government Steven Miles, inspecting the construction site, said the upgrade had supported more than 50 local jobs.

“Across the State, Works for Queensland is has created or supported over 20,000 jobs, with Queenslanders employed to work on more than 1,860 projects," he said.

New mayor sworn in for Rockhampton

Tony Williams has been sworn in as Mayor of Rockhampton Regional Council following the declaration of the polls by the Electoral Commission of Queensland.

Cr Williams received about 25 per cent of the formal first preference vote in a by-election contested by 17 candidates following the shock resignation of former mayor Margaret Strelow on November 9.

The vote came after the Queensland Government changed legislation that would have automatically placed previous mayoral runner-up Chris ‘Pineapple’ Hooper in the job.

And some residents will be heading back to the polling booths again soon, as Cr Williams’ election saw him. . .

Resignation ‘childish’ or ‘a position of principle’?

Rockhampton MP Barry O’Rourke has slammed the resignation of former Mayor Margaret Strelow as a “childish tantrum” or expensive “stunt”.

Ms Strelow's resignation this week will lead to a by-election after the State Government decided to change local government laws that would have seen previous runner-up Chris Hooper become mayor of Rockhampton.

It came after a misconduct finding by the Councillor Conduct Tribunal over a day trip to an Adani solar farm in India in 2017, joined by other Queensland regional mayors.

Runner-up rule to change after resignation outcry

A law change is afoot to turn around the situation that sees Rockhampton mayoral runner-up Chris Hooper in line for the title following yesterday's shock resignation of Margaret Strelow.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said today the Palaszczuk Government would introduce and pass a bill to retrospectively amend the Local Government Act once the new parliament was sworn in.

"I have received advice that should this be completed at the earliest opportunity, any vacancies to any mayoral or councillor positions that have recently arisen will need to be filled through a by-election," he said.

Rockhampton Mayor in shock resignation

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow announced her resignation late yesterday via social media.

The shock announcement came after a Councillor Conduct Tribunal found her guilty of misconduct over a day trip to an Adani solar farm, she said.

"I absolutely refute their finding. I acted at all times in accordance with my own conscience and on the advice of senior legal practitioners as well as on the advice of officers from the Department of Local Government," Cr Strelow said.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said she was absolutely gutted over hearing the news.

Flare aims to reduce carbon footprint

Rockhampton Region Waste and Recycling has installed an innovative biogas system as it moves towards a more sustainable future. 

The biogas flare, installed by industry leaders LMS Energy, is a big step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the Lakes Creek Road waste management facility. 

Waste to resource recovery councillor Shane Latcham said it was fantastic to see the project up and running.

“The biogas flare might not look like much from the outside, but there’s a lot going on below the surface,” Cr Latcham said.

A former Blackwater boy, Mr Bowden's appointment to Advance Rockhampton follows 15 years of service working directly with the Lord Mayor at Brisbane City Council.

Concrete future for old bridges under renewal plan

Two bridges on Casuarina Rd, Midgee, outside Rockhampton are getting a much-needed upgrade thanks to nearly $800,000 of funding from the Australian Government Bridge Renewal Program and the local council.

Contractor CASA Engineering is carrying out the work on the Swan Creek and Serpentine Creek bridges.

They are some of the last to be updated to concrete bridges as part of a gradual process by Rockhampton Regional Council to upgrade rural timber bridges in the region.

Load limits on the old bridges means access has previously been restricted for trucks needing to reach properties past the bridges.

Rockhampton push for $50m TAFE project

City leaders are spearheading a push for a TAFE Centre of Excellence to turbocharge skills and training in the Rockhampton region.

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Klomp was joined by Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow, local Regional Development Australia chair Grant Cassidy, and Adnought Sheet Metal Fabrications manager Greg Adams in calling on the State Government to financially back the $49.8 million project.

Touch of glass for Rocky road resealing

Rockhampton Regional Council is adding glass to the mix when it comes to local road resealing, with a trial underway on Murray St.

Councillor for Infrastructure Tony Williams said the asphalt for the project would include 5 per cent recycled glass – which equates to about 120,000 glass bottles.

A museum full of jobs for Rockhampton

Bumper capital works spend for Rockhampton

Rockhampton Regional Council has announced a record $170 million capital works program to stimulate the economy in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

The council said also that the average residential ratepayer would benefit from a rates freeze, delivered through a $70 reduction to be applied to the first rates bill when it was issued later this month.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said results would be varied across the region as a land revaluation saw fluctuations up-and-down from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Council unveils relief package for Rockhampton

Rockhampton Regional Council has voted to immediately roll out a relief package worth up to $1.3 million to help support local businesses and community groups.

The package includes: 

  • No additional interest on outstanding rates until further notice
  • Lease fee refunds for eligible sporting and community groups
  • Existing business licences extended until June 30 2021
  • Rent relief for commercial tenants
  • Cash contribution of $20,000 each for two local animal welfare agencies – Capricorn Animal Aid and Central Queensland Animal Society

Multimillion-dollar upgrade for Rockhampton airport

Stepped-up security requirements have sparked a planned overhaul at the Rockhampton airport, including more screening equipment and a dedicated FIFO area.

Rockhampton Regional Council revealed the plans today for a staged upgrade, with $7.79 million for the initial stages.

It says the Master Plan has been triggered by the Federal Government’s directive to strengthen security measures with the installation of new x-ray body and baggage scanners across regional airports by December 31.
