Monadelphous lands new CQ contracts

Engineering company Monadelphous Group has bagged a trio of construction and maintenance contracts in Central Queensland.

Monadelphous has been awarded a new three-year contract with Queensland Alumina Limited to continue to provide general mechanical maintenance services at its operations in Gladstone.

The company has also secured a 10-month extension to its contract with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance for provision of dragline shutdown and maintenance services to its operations in the Bowen Basin.

And its fabrication business, SinoStruct, has secured a new four-year agreement to supply wellsite equipment to Origin Energy.

Gladstone refineries in $75m overhaul projects

Rio Tinto’s two Gladstone alumina refineries have $75 million of planned maintenance shutdown work underway, in a boost for the local economy.

The 2020 shutdowns at the Queensland Alumina Ltd (QAL) and Yarwun refineries have seen up to 500 additional specialised contractors working at the sites in recent months. 

The company says the projects are providing significant economic benefits for the Gladstone region, including local spend with labour-hire firms, transport and vehicle-hire businesses, maintenance workshops and accommodation suppliers.

QAL employees embrace peer support scheme

Queensland Alumina Limited has taken R U OK? Day to the next level, with the launch of an onsite peer support program.

The program allows QAL team members to become trained support volunteers who can help colleagues experiencing stress by providing a listening ear, practical assistance, or connecting them to professional help when needed.

Workplace giving adds up for QAL team

A 30-year partnership has seen Queensland Alumina Limited team members donate $330,891 towards disability support provider CPL – Choice, Passion, Life - through its workplace giving program.

The support has helped CPL purchase therapy resources and equipment, improve community centres throughout Queensland, and create a host of other life-changing opportunities for children and adults with a disability.

“Our workplace giving program is an opt-in scheme that allows QAL team members to donate as little as $1 per pay cycle to selected charities using their post-tax salary," QAL Redside manager Simon Rice said.

Red mud to riches under Qld reprocessing plan

A Queensland company is poised to step up to commercial production with a project to extract valuable rare earths and critical minerals from the aluminium industry’s red mud waste.

Alumtek Minerals is in talks with QAL in Gladstone to base an initial Stage 1 plant there after completing three years of successful bench trials and proof-of-concept work with SGS Metallurgy.

Alumtek Minerals has started the search for financial backers for its Project Reclaim in Gladstone following recent completion of feasibility studies.

McConnell Dowell delivers new waste pipe for QAL

McConnell Dowell has won a contract to deliver a new 8.8km waste line for Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) at Gladstone.

McConnell Dowell said the design and construct contract marked the start of what was hoped to be a longstanding partnership with QAL .

The waste line replacement project encompasses the broad scope of:

  • Design of the new waste line and the augmentation design of the support structure
  • Removal of the existing pipeline
