Australia must build like-for-like power stations to replace its retiring coal-fired fleet, says Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate Matt Canavan.

A $14.8 million injection to nudge the CopperString 2.0 power project towards lift-off is among a package of COVID-19 fightback measures the State Government announced today.

‘Micropiling’ technique secures FNQ power towers

Powerlink has completed a $6 million mountainside project to maintain the transmission line connecting Barron Gorge Power Station to the grid in Far North Queensland.

Helicopters, all-terrain vehicles and specialised equipment were used to complete maintenance work on 18 electricity transmission towers along the line near Cairns, supporting 17 jobs in the process.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the 4km of transmission line was located in very steep terrain in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area adjacent to the Kuranda Scenic Railway line.

CopperString power project moves to EIS phase

The proposed $1.5 billion CopperString project continues to push ahead, with the release of final terms of reference for the project’s environmental impact statement (EIS).

It comes after the The State Government last week pledged $1.18 million for the CopperString 2.0 power project as part of a North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy

The project proponent CuString is currently negotiating agreements with foundation customers and financing from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).
