New container depot for Port of Mackay

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) aims to unlock new trade opportunities with the construction of a multi-million-dollar container depot at the Port of Mackay.

The 1.3ha facility will be the first of its kind in the region, supporting existing trades and enabling regular containerised imports and exports directly through Mackay.

NQBP awarded the construction contract to Ward Civil & Environmental Engineering in December 2025, with completion planned for mid- to late 2026.

Bumper month at Port of Mackay

Port of Mackay has recorded its biggest month of throughput ever, with more than 448,000 tonnes of cargo going through the port in August.

Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said it was the first time the port’s monthly trade figure had started with a ‘4’.

“Achieving a monthly output of 448,065 tonnes in August is a great result for the Mackay team, compared to 277,624 tonnes recorded in the same month last year," she said.

Port of Mackay maintenance dredging completed

Maintenance dredging at the Port of Mackay has been completed.

The specialist dredging vessel TSHD Brisbane would depart the port today after commencing dredging operations earlier this month, said NQBP Chief Executive Officer Nicolas Fertin said.

“Completing the maintenance dredging on schedule was no mean feat in a marine environment where shipping schedules, tides and weather can all have an impact,” Mr Fertin said. 

“The completion of the maintenance dredging ensures our port can continue to keep trade flowing through the New Year and beyond.”

Wharf extension kicks off in port projects push

Three significant infrastructure projects supporting 100 jobs are underway at the Port of Mackay in the run-up to Christmas, as work to extend Wharf 1 kicks off.

Queensland-based company Davbridge Constructions will deliver the $2.4 million extension project.

The project comes as upgrades on Wharf 4 reach the final stages with the installation of the 60-tonne steel access bridge by contractor V2R Projects.

Also progressing is the $1.5 million stabilisation of the western revetment with Queensland-based contractors MGN Civil arriving on site earlier this month.

Infrastructure overhaul for Port of Mackay

Port of Mackay is set for $17 million in infrastructure projects over the next 12 months.

The projects include construction of a new tug berth facility; upgrades to Wharves 1 and 4; seawall repairs; and essential maintenance dredging – job-creating projects for the sugar city.

Solid trade results for Port of Mackay

The Port of Mackay has recorded its second-best results for financial year trade throughput after topping three million tonnes despite the global economic impact of COVID-19.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey made the announcement, with the port recording 3.17 million throughput tonnes in 2019-20, supporting jobs and industry in the region.

ships arriving in January.

And Höegh Autoliners’ monthly service to Mackay continues to be well

Port of Mackay does heavy lifting for Hay Point project

The “grand finale” in the transportation of new ship loader cargo destined for Hay Point Coal Terminal has been completed at the Port of Mackay.

Spanning 50m long, and weighing 230 metric tonnes, the ship loader shuttle is a replacement for an old piece of equipment which was lifted from the vessel Pauwgracht in spectacular fashion at Wharf One five weeks ago.

The Pauwgracht, which is operated by BigLift Shipping, will make the return journey to unload the cargo at its new home at the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point Coal Terminal.

Shadforth to lead Port of Mackay road project

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation has appointed Queensland-based construction company Shadforth for a $2.9 million road project to create a secondary access for the Port of Mackay.

NQBP chief executive officer Nicolas Fertin said work to extend the road from Edmund Casey Drive to Slade Point Road was starting this month and was expected to be completed by early 2020.

“Extending the road by 500m along existing port property will unlock developable land,” Mr Fertin said.

Community members are urged to share their memorabilia to help mark the Port of Mackay’s 80th anniversary next month.

NQBP trade development manager, Darren Fursman, said Mackay was one of the major servicing centres for the Central Queensland mining and agricultural industries.

The first roll-on roll-off (RORO) ship to berth at Port of Mackay arrived on Thursday, with four Caterpillar 794AC mining trucks on board.

Port of Mackay has recorded its third best annual trade performance on record, with more than 2.9 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2016-17.

The Port of Mackay has entered a new era of break bulk trade with the installation of a federally certified wash-down facility and quarantine-approved premises within the secure port precinct.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt, visiting Mackay this week, said the new facility meant North Queensland Bulk Ports would be able to wash down equipment landed at the port and destined for use in mines or other projects.
