Investment to stack odds in favour of Isa rail uptick

Queensland Rail will look at enabling double-stacked trains to run between North West Queensland and Townsville as part of a $50 million investment package announced for the Mount Isa Line.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced in parliament today that three more projects had been approved to bolster freight movement between North Queensland’s largest port and the minerals province.

A business case is to be finalised this year on the potential to run double-stacked trains from Mount Isa to Stuart and potentially to the Port of Townsville.

State reveals detail on rail incentive scheme

The State Government has finalised guidelines around an $80 million incentive scheme for commercial freight users on the Mount Isa Line.

In town for a Cabinet meeting, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited the Mount Isa Line today and said the Queensland Government’s investment would support the growth of the mining industry in the state’s north west.

“As part of this year’s State Budget released in June, my government announced $20 million in annual funding for four years in incentives for commercial freight users on the Mount Isa Line," she said.
