The Mount Isa City Council has handed down its 2021-22 budget, with $38.5 million earmarked for capital works and no increase to current debt.

Residential rates will increase by 3.75 per cent overall across all property rating categories in 2021-22.

Mayor Danielle Slade said this year’s budget reflected the measures the council had to take last year to minimise the impact on ratepayers during the worst of the pandemic, as well as what would need to be done in the next 12 months.

Mount Isa council outlines new procurement system

Mount Isa City Council is overhauling its procurement procedures and plans an update session for suppliers early next month.

The council is inviting all of its suppliers to register with its new procurement platform, Vendor Panel Marketplace.

In an announcement on the shift, the council said it was streamlining procedures – including the request-for-quotation (RFQ) and request-for-tender (RFT) process – in line with current State Government regulations and council policy.

New leader for Mount Isa infrastructure portfolio

Mount Isa City Council has appointed local resident Renee Wallace to the permanent position of director of infrastructure services.

Ms Wallace, who was most recently the manager of facilities at Gidgee Healing, is due to begin in her role at council on Monday, February 15.

“Renee has extensive and diverse experience in local government and engineering and will be an excellent addition to council,” chief executive officer David Keenan said.

Camooweal facilities set for $900,000 makeover

Mount Isa City Council will be carrying out a major upgrade of the Camooweal Community Hall and other works throughout the town thanks to a $909,519 grant.

Camooweal works to be funded under the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program include:

  • The upgrade of the Community Hall, incorporating electrical and fire safety upgrades, re-stumping/levelling of the building, and finishing floor levelling, particularly on the external deck, to bring the building up to Heritage and safety standards;

Recycling facility planned for Mount Isa

A purpose-built Materials Recovering Facility (MRF) is coming to Mount Isa after the local council secured $6 million from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

Mount Isa City Council expects the project to create up to 14 construction jobs, as well as eight new ongoing jobs in the local waste management sector.

Council reaches out to businesses on COVID-19

Mount Isa City Council is reaching out to gauge the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on the region's businesses to assist in its decision-making process for the next 12 months.

The council said it was contacting hundreds of local businesses and was also encouraging all interested businesses to submit an impact statement.

Council plan to transform vacant corner ‘eyesore’

Mount Isa City Council hopes to turn the former Harvey Norman site into a vibrant community space.

The council decided in a meeting this week to acquire the 2024sq m site on the corner of Miles and Grace streets, which has been vacant since a fire two years ago.
