Coalfields hub marks 50 years

Tales of the good old days echoed across the coalfields during Moranbah’s 50th birthday celebrations over the long weekend.

Thousands of locals and visitors rolled up to over 12 planned events to pay tribute to the history and people that built the town.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Moranbah became ground zero for past and current residents and workers to gather and share their stories of the last five decades of Moranbah.

Green light for Olive Downs coking coal mine

Pembroke Resources has received key federal approvals for its $1 billion Olive Downs coking coal project, south-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland.

The final approvals under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act pave the way for the granting of mining leases and the start of construction, the company says.

It follows the grant of the Environmental Authority by the Queensland Government in 2019.

Calls to fast-track industrial manslaughter laws

The miners’ union has called on the Queensland Government to bring forward the passage of new laws extending industrial manslaughter offences to the state’s mining industry.

It comes in the wake of last week’s accident at Grosvenor coal mine.

Carborough Downs cuts 160 jobs as COVID-19 bites

Fitzroy Australia Resources is shedding 160 contract positions at its Carborough Downs operation, about 20km east of Moranbah.

The company says the cut is a direct result of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Significant reductions in the price and demand for coking coal have occurred since mid-March due to lockdowns and reduced steel production across the world.

Fitzroy Australia Resources said it has taken proactive steps to ensure the long term viability of its operations by suspending bord and pillar operations.

Longwall and development operations continue as normal.

Board of Inquiry announced after Grosvenor gas blast

The State Government has announced an independent mine safety Board of Inquiry following a coal mine explosion last week that left five men with serious burns.

Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the board would be able to conduct public hearings, call witnesses and make broad inquiries, findings and recommendations relating to the underground gas explosion that occurred at Anglo-American’s Grosvenor coal mine outside Moranbah.

The Queensland Mines Inspectorate says it has secured the underground site at Grosvenor coal mine where a gas ignition injured five workers last week

Staged re-entry at underground blast site

A staged re-entry has commenced at the underground mine near Moranbah where five men were seriously injured in an explosion last week.

Four men remain in a critical condition in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and another, aged 44, is decsribed as being in a good condition after suffering severe burns at Grosvenor mine on Wednesday.

Investigations continue on the site of a mine explosion

A forensic investigator has joined the Queensland Mines Inspectorate (QMI) team on site at Grosvenor Coal Mine as part of the ongoing investigation into the gas ignition event that caused burns injuries to five miners.

Four miners remain listed as ‘critical’ and are being treated the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Two of them are aged 51, another 43 and another 45 year-old.

A fifth injured miner aged 44-years old is listed as being in a ‘good’ condition. The explosion happened underground on the site near Moranbah on Wednesday afternoon.

The underground coal mine at the centre of an horrific blast on Wednesday had experienced ongoing issues with high methane levels, the CFMEU says.

Five men were airlifted to Brisbane after suffering severe burns in an underground explosion, believed to have been caused by ignition of gas on the longwall face at Anglo American's Grosvenor mine near Moranbah.

The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital said this afternoon that four of the men, aged in their 40s and early 50s, remained in a critical condition. The fifth man, 44, was now in a stable condition, a spokeswoman said.

Critically injured miners airlifted after explosion

Five workers have been airlifted to Brisbane after suffering serious burns in an underground explosion at Grosvenor coal mine near Moranbah.

Union sources say an ignition of gas on the longwall face was believed to have caused the explosion, which occurred about 3.15pm yesterday.

The injured men were taken to Moranbah Hospital with significant burns to the upper torso and airways, the Queensland Ambulance Service said.

Five miners have been seriously injured in an underground explosion at Grosvenor coal mine near Moranbah in Central Queensland this afternoon.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said this evening that the workers were being airlifted to Brisbane suffering significant burns.

Union safety inspectors are attending the site and will undertake a thorough investigation into the causes of what appears to be an ignition of gas on the longwall face, the CFMEU says.

A Queensland Mines Inspectorate (QMI) spokeswoman also confirmed that inspectors had been deployed to the Anglo American mine.

Mastermyne wins $250m contract extension

Mackay-based Mastermyne Group has secured a contract extension worth $250-$300 million to continue its work at Anglo American mines at Moranbah for the next three years.

The company today announced the renewal of the Moranbah Region Umbrella Contract, covering work at the Moranbah North and Grosvenor mines.

It includes an option to extend for a further two years at Anglo's discretion.

Bumper quarter for Stanmore Coal

Stanmore Coal more than doubled its coal sales last quarter compared to a year ago.

The company today reported a 115 per cent year-over-year increase in sales to 688,000 tonnes of coal.

A record 872,000 tonnes of ROM coal was mined at its Moranbah operations in the June quarter, leading to a record 721,000 tonnes of saleable coal produced in that period.

Earlier this month Stanmore announced it was buying a 600-tonne Cat 6060 exacavator from Hastings Deering to increase overburden removal capacity at Isaac Plains East.

State approval for $1b Moranbah coal mine

Queensland’s Coordinator-General has approved the proposed $1 billion Olive Downs metallurgical coal mine, 40km south-east of Moranbah.

Premier
Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement in Parliament today.

“The mine is
expected to create 1000 operational jobs and 500 jobs during construction,” Ms
Palaszczuk said.

“The project will contribute an estimated $8 billion to the local economy and more than $10 billion to the Queensland economy."

Pembroke Resources chairman and chief executive officer Barry Tudor welcomed the approval, noting that it was a significant development for the project that reflected close co-operation with the Queensland Co-ordinator General. . .
