The role of women in the Australian mining sector was the strongest yet in Diggers & Dealers awards.

The GJ Stokes Memorial Award went to Amanda Lacaze after moving into the mining sector to run Lynas Rare Earths to set up a major processing plant in Kalgoorlie for its Mt Weld deposit and maintaining an operation in Malaysia at a time the company was facing debt and other challenges.

She restructured the balance sheet, cut costs and focused on high-value magnet material which created remarkable growth and over the next 12 years. . .

Mining industry wary over future fuel flow

Peak industry group Coal Australia has voiced serious concerns about fuel supply and price security, particularly in regional Australia where tens of thousands of coal sector jobs are based.

Coal Australia chief executive officer Stuart Bocking was commenting as conflict centred on Iran continued to choke shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which usually provides passage for about 20 per cent of the world's oil.

Caterpillar launches new hydraulic mining shovel

The new Cat 6015 hydraulic mining shovel boasts significant design enhancements that boost machine uptime, efficiency and durability, according to the manufacturer.

Caterpillar says its new flexible shovel design delivers a low cost-per-tonne operation.

"We’ve given the new 6015 class-leading tool carrying capacity and heavy-duty undercarriage protection to deliver reliable and productive operation in the most demanding conditions,” Caterpillar hydraulic mining shovel product value stream manager Ryan Mitchell said.

"With its 14.6-tonne bucket payload, the shovel provides proven pass match efficiency with Cat 773, 775 and 777 haul trucks operating in the 55. . .

Maiden indicated resource for Rolleston South

Drilling late last year has resulted in a maiden indicated coal resource of 33.74Mt being estimated for Yari Minerals' Rolleston South project.

Yari (ASX:YAR) said the indicated resource had been defined following the incorporation of data from four additional drillholes totalling 1287.9m.

The additional drilling has increased confidence in seam continuity and geological interpretation, contributing to a 17 per cent increase in total coal resources at Rolleston South to about 223Mt, with inferred tonnage now estimated at 193.8Mt.

Mining sector fights threat to fuel tax credits

Mining groups have hit back at a push to abolish the federal diesel fuel tax credit scheme, saying it would harm industry competitiveness.

The Australian Greens have stepped up calls for the change after reports the Labor Environment Action Network was campaigning for Treasurer Jim Chalmers to strip miners of the tax credits.

Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) chief executive officer Warren Pearce said this targeted campaign to cut the scheme should not be viewed as a way to fix holes in the federal budget.

North Queensland is on the verge of its next mining boom, according to Eagle Drilling NQ managing director Brian ‘Moscow’ Forgan.

The company celebrated its 20th anniversary on the weekend with staff and suppliers. The community was represented by National Party Senator Susan McDonald and Charters Towers Mayor Liz Schmidt.

Moscow’s long career with Boart Longyear was meant to culminate with a promotion to Brisbane as operations manager in 2006.

Bentonite mine meets new market demand

A small Queensland town can rely on a long mine life for one of its largest employers.

The Gurulmundi bentonite mine north of Miles has been operating for more than 40 years and has another four decades reserve to call on at current production levels.

That figure of around 60,000tpa represents a 250 percent increase on that of 2021 when Emerald-based mine services company Terrequip took over ownership from international materials giant Sibelco.

Conference shows mining still Australia’s economic driver

The largest mining conference in Australia has again seen more than 2000 delegates descend on Kalgoorlie for three days.

The reminder by Diggers & Dealers Forum chairman Jim Walker was that this 34th annual event showed mining remains the economic driver for our economy and that Western Australia was leading that charge.

Innovation at the heart of mining progress

BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) asset president Adam Lancey is heralding a new age in mining at the Global Resources Innovation Expo (GRX) in Brisbane.

Backgrounding his keynote speech this morning was the fact that 40 per cent of the steelmaking coal that allowed the world to urbanise and decarbonise was sourced from Queensland, and mining’s contribution to the state’s economy was $122 billion, he said.

Pacgold releases maiden MRE for Alice River gold project

Pacgold has announced a maiden mineral resource estimate for its Alice River project while highlighting the large tonnages of gold mineralisation near surface.

Indicated and inferred resources for Alice River stand at 12.2Mt at 1.2g/t gold for 474Koz gold at a 0.5g/t gold cut-off grade within a global resource of 26.7Mt at 1.01g/t gold for 854Koz gold.

The company describes the exploration of the Alice River system, 300km north-west of Cairns, as being still very much in its infancy.

Peabody demands answers on Moranbah North

Peabody Energy is threatening to terminate a $5 billion-plus deal to acquire a raft of Anglo American coal mines in Queensland if a restart timeframe for the Moranbah North operation is not pinned down promptly.

Production remains suspended at the Bowen Basin longwall site after an explosion occurred underground on March 31.

Peabody has notified Anglo American that it classes the ongoing stoppage as a material adverse change in terms of the planned acquisition.

Australian mining failed by media

The biggest issue the Australian mining industry faces is not environmental bonds, over-regulation or land access.

Australian gold industry experts Surbiton Associates director James Pollock said it was a lack of publicity that was letting the industry down.

On the final day of the Gold Coast Gold Conference, Mr Pollock said gold mining was worth around $40 billion per year to the national account.
