Court action over McArthur River Mine bond

Traditional Owners and an environmental group are taking the NT Government to the Supreme Court over McArthur River Mine.

The action concerns the government's decision to slash the environmental bond for the Glencore-owned zinc operation by almost $120 million.

The Environmental Defenders Office, which will act on their behalf, said Borroloola residents Jack Green and Josephine Davey Green had filed judicial review proceedings challenging the November 2020 decision.

They are joined in the litigation by the Environment Centre NT.

Skeleton staff cover mine essentials as gulf cyclone travels inland

Glencore has contingency plans to ensure the safety of its workforce left onsite at McArthur River Mine at Boorroloola in the Northern Territory.

The mine is more than 30 kilometres off the coast in the Gulf of Carpentaria and in the path of Cyclone Trevor.

Glencore suspended operations at McArthur River Mine on Friday.

The Category Four system, described by the ABC as being the size of News South Wales, made landfall this morning about 100 kms south east of Port McArthur and is making its way inland as a Cat 3 system.
