Hammer time for $120.3m Mackay road project

A 10-tonne hammer and crane are on site to kick off construction on the first of three major bridge upgrades under the $120.3 million Mackay Northern Access Upgrade project.

The equipment will be used to drive 36 piles, ranging from 9.5m to 12.5m and weighing 6-8 tonnes, into Goosepond Creek in the next two weeks.

The Mackay Northern Access Upgrade project is expected to creat about 150 jobs altogether and will see additional lanes completed on the Bruce Highway between Ron Camm Bridge Rd and Bald Hill Rd.

The Mackay, Isaac, Whitsunday (MIW) METS Export Hub is seeking business input to help boost export capabilities and opportunities.

It is conducting a survey of mining equipment and technology services businesses in the region.

MIW METS Export Hub manager Dean Kirkwood said business input was fundamental to the success of the Capability Analysis and Supply Chain Mapping Project.

“If we get this right, the benefits to our region will be enormous, so I’d encourage all businesses in the mining equipment and technology services (METS) sector to complete the survey and be part of a project that could potentially set. . .

Bruce Highway safety works kick off near Mackay

Vassallo Construction is kicking off work on more than $50 million in safety upgrades for the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Proserpine.

The jointly Australian and Queensland Government-funded project is expected support 95 jobs.

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the package of works - between The Leap and Careys Creek -would address safety concerns on Queensland’s main north-south commuter, tourist and freight route.

“The existing road will be upgraded to improve driver safety, freight efficiency and heavy vehicle management – crucial aspects for this major trade link,” Mr Christensen said.

Works will include upgrades to nine intersections. . .

Mackay hosts new FutureFit mine training academy

BHP has welcomed 250 apprentices and trainees in Mackay and Perth as part of a new program to build skills and create career pathways into the mining sector.

The training program, delivered through the new BHP FutureFit Academy, is being developed in conjunction with CQ University and WA's North Metropolitan TAFE.

BHP said the first two campuses had been established at existing BHP warehouse and repair facilities in Mackay in Queensland and Welshpool in Perth.

About 125 people have started their training in each facility.

Building contract awarded for mining support hub

Mackay construction company Fergus Builders has been awarded the contract to build the $7 million Resources Centre of Excellence.

The $3.28 million contract includes construction of an administration building, workshop, laboratory, landscaping and utilities.

The next stage of development will include fit-out of an underground mining simulator.

Assistant Minister for State Development and Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the awarding of the tender to Fergus Builders was a major step forward in the delivery of the centre.

Resource group ready for another Mackay rally

Mackay’s Resource Industry Network plans to rally the region again next weekend, hot on the heels of another State approvals setback for the Carmichael coal project.
