Deal brings forward major regional transport spending

A $1.9 billion funding deal has been announced to fast-track road and rail projects throughout Queensland.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk released details of the agreement today, which will see spending brought forward on projects including Stage 2 of the Mackay Ring Road, the Rockhampton Ring Road, and Stage 5 of the Cairns Southern Access works.

The Morrison Government said it would bring forward nearly $650 million in funding and provide more than $680 million in new funding, with the Palaszczuk Government committing $606 million.

Piles of progress for Mackay Ring Rd

The $497.3 million Mackay Ring Rd project is on track for completion in late 2020 after passing a number of milestones in recent months.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesman said procurement activities were nearing completion, with subcontracts previously awarded for all major components.

The Mackay Ring Road (Stage 1) involves the construction of 13 bridges, including four water crossings and nine overpass structures.

The department says the last of 462 piles are in place, including those for the new Pioneer River bridge (see footage below).

Multifix creditors meeting set for next week

A creditors' meeting will be held on April 26 following the collapse of Mackay Ring Road subcontractors Multifix Constructions.

Morgan Lane and Nikhil Khatri of Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants were appointed voluntary administrators of Multifix Constructions last week.

Established since 1997, Multifix specialises in formwork, reinforcing, and concreting, and had been engaged by CPB Contractors for the Mackay Ring Road project.

CPB Contractors is part of the CIMIC Group, which declined an iQ request for comment on the Multifix issue.
