Lava Blue unlocking more sources of High Purity Alumina

Queensland-based Lava Blue has faced down an embarrassment of options in the emerging critical minerals industry.

With both a quality high purity alumina (HPA) resource in the state’s north and technology that promises to help fill a growing deficit in western production, they’ve chosen to concentrate on the latter.

HPA is a pure, high-grade form of non-metallurgical alumina or aluminium oxide (Al2O3).

HPA possesses properties such as corrosion and scratch resistance, high brightness and an ability to withstand high temperatures.

It enjoys a growing range of applications in lithium-ion batteries, smartphones. . .

Lava Blue advances Charters Towers HPA plans

Lava Blue says it is making great strides towards a decision to build a high-purity aluminium (HPA) plant at Charters Towers after successful processing test work with the Queensland University of Technology.

The unlisted public company holds tenements between Greenvale and Mount Garnet that are rich in kaolinitic clays, bearing a high alumina content.

Lava Blue managing director Michael McCann said the Lava Plains tenements had a JORC resource of about 15 million tonnes grading at 28 per cent AL2O3.

While having a kaolin resource itself was no rarity, he said. . .

Vanadium proponent to build battery electrolyte plant

Vecco Group has made the final investment decision to construct a $25 million vanadium battery electrolyte manufacturing plant in Brisbane.

The company holds the Debella vanadium and HPA (high purity alumina) project north of Julia Creek in North-West Queensland, which it aims to bring online to feed the plant in about two years.

The manufacturing plant is being delivered in partnership with Shanghai Electric, one of the largest electrical equipment manufacturing companies in China and one of the largest vanadium flow battery manufacturers in the world.

As part of their support for the electrolyte facility and new vanadium battery. . .

Alpha HPA on track for 2023 start in Gladstone

Alpha HPA has its sights set on a 2023 start for large-scale production at its planned $308 million high purity alumina (HPA) plant in Gladstone.

The company last week announced that the Queensland Co-ordinator General had approved its application for a material change of use to construct the processing plant in the Gladstone State Development Area.

And Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles today marked that milestone with a site visit, hailing the HPA First project as a great. . .

Milestone approval for $308m Gladstone plant

Alpha HPA has received a key development permit to progress its planned $308 million high-purity alumina industrial plant in Gladstone.

The company announced that the Queensland Government Office of the Co-ordinator General had approved its application for a material change of use to construct the processing plant in the Gladstone State Development Area.

It said this represented the major State approval required for the HPA First project at Gladstone, with the final outstanding approval being the Environmental Authority.

Alpha HPA is working with AECOM to complete the required studies and applications and is expecting EA approval in the. . .

TECH looks to ‘zero waste’ outcome for NQ plant

Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub proponents have entered a memorandum of understanding with James Cook University for work hoped to see the project become world's first 'zero waste' nickel /cobalt production facility.

Pure Minerals subsidiary Queensland Pacific Metals said the initial focus of the research program would be the leach residue produced at the planned battery chemicals plant.

The processing option being used for the TECH project was more sustainable than the traditional high pressure acid leach (HPAL) as it resulted in a much lower amount of residue, it said.

Another advantage is that the benign residue can be dry. . .

Technical progress for $308m HPA plant proponent

The company behind plans for a $308 million high-purity alumina industrial plant in Gladstone has started manufacturing HPA pellets for potential sapphire glass industry customers.

Alpha HPA plans to produce about 10,000tpa of high purity alumina at the HPA First project in Gladstone, using its own solvent extraction and HPA refining technology.

It is operating a Brisbane-based pilot plant to meet HPA test orders, particularly from sapphire glass/LED manufacturers.

"The company continues to make excellent progress on several technical and commercial work streams critical to readying the. . .

TECH proponent ready to kick off pilot plant work

Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub proponent Pure Minerals plans to begin producing battery materials from a pilot plant by the end of 2020.

Stage one pilot plant operations are set to commence in the last quarter of this year to produce a nickel-cobalt mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), aluminium hydroxide and saleable haematite.

Stage two piloting - scheduled for early 2021 - will refine the MHP to nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate and the aluminium hydroxide to 4N high purity alumina (HPA).

The pilot work will be carried out at the new ALS Global Hydrometallurgy Centre of Excellence in Perth with support from. . .

NQ project set to meet supercharged market

The electric vehicle battery market is being supercharged during the COVID-19 crisis, and a Townsville project is poised to make the most of the hot demand.

Newly appointed Pure Minerals chief executive officer Stephen Grocott said the company’s TECH battery chemicals project was well-placed to enter the fray.

It skipped the steps involved in getting a mining operation off the ground by tapping established ore sources in New Caledonia and drew on a supply and logistics chain already in place for the mothballed Queensland Nickel operation, he said.

“We can move quite quickly for what is a. . .
