Tenders called for next stage of water pipeline project

Townsville City Council is calling tenders to construct the next section of pipe for the Haughton Pipeline Duplication Project.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the 3.8km section of pipe would connect with work currently underway to extend the pipeline from the Haughton River.

“The Federal Government’s commitment to fund stage 2 means council has been able to get a head start on works to connect the two stages," she said.

“In February NQ Excavations was awarded one tender for construction of the Haughton River Crossing. This work commenced last week.

Work on the next section of Townsville's Haughton water pipeline is set to begin within weeks, with the tender awarded to local company NQ Excavations.

The project will extend the pipeline a further 330m under the Haughton River, preparing for the construction of Stage 2.

Townsville City Council said the funding for the extension to Stage 1 would come from the State Government’s $225 million commitment for the council’s three-point water security solution.

Delivery of the full water pipeline will take a further three years, with work on Stage 1 on track to be fully complete. . .

Water pipeline on track for March completion

Stage 1 of the Haughton Pipeline Duplication project is 85 per cent done and on track for completion by March, Townsville City Council says.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said she was impressed by the progress being made by the contractors working on the water project, with about 29km of the 34km of pipeline laid.

“To date there have been 200 businesses and over 1000 workers that have been involved in construction of the water pipeline either directly or indirectly which is fantastic for our local economy," she said.
