Calls to review reforms into mine safety

Structural reform was needed to effectively institute workplace safety on mine sites said the Mining and Energy Union.

This follows separate fatalities on a coal mine near Blackwater and a gold lease near Nebo late last week. 

Two open cut coal mines are back to work this morning (Mon Jan 5) at Coronado Resources' Curragh Complex while operations remain paused at Mammoth Underground Mine, the scene of a fatality caused after a roof collapsed.

Safety tripping over itself in securing mine sites

A senior Queensland mining professional says supervisory competence and cumbersome safety and health management system processes are compromising safety on mine sites.

There have been four deaths on coal mines in Queensland this calendar year. 

Fifty-one-year-old worker Frank Thomas died last week on Oaky Creek mine while undertaking a mechanical role. Another man was taken to Rockhampton Hospital with serious injuries.

The system needed to be better managed to start with, auditor, consultant and site senior executive Scott Graham said.

Flood victim’s name withheld

The family of a woman who died while crossing a river south of Cloncurry on Thursday has asked her name be withheld from publication.

Police are otherwise continuing their investigations into the death of the 28-year-old Phosphate Hill worker whose body was found south of Cloncurry.

Emergency services received reports around 1.15pm of a white Toyota Hilux that was located partially submerged in the flooded Malbon River, near Cloncurry-Duchess Road.

Curragh operations halted as death probe continues

The man killed at the Curragh coal mine near Blackwater at the weekend has been identified as experienced dragline operator Clark Peadon.

Mine owner Coronado Global Resources said Mr Peadon had worked at Curragh since 2006, stating "he was a highly respected member of our team".

Operations at Curragh have been suspended as authorities work through investigations into the fatal accident.

Curragh coal mine worker killed

Investigations are underway after a worker was fatally injured while on duty overnight at Curragh coal mine near Blackwater.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) said the incident occurred prior to 12.40am today. All work on site has ceased.

"RSHQ inspectors are at site commencing inquiries into the nature and cause of the incident," the authority stated

"The worker’s family has been notified."

Mine owner Coronado Global Resources extended deepest sympathies to the family, friends and workmates of the employee.

Carborough Downs worker killed in underground incident

A mine worker has been killed while working underground at the Carborough Downs coal operation, about 20km east of Moranbah.

Mine owner Fitzroy Australia Resources said the long-term employee was fatally injured about 11.50pm on Monday (November 25).

“We are deeply saddened by this news and Fitzroy extends our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of the worker,” Fitzroy Australia Resources chief executive officer Grant Polwarth said.'

Mr Polwarth said the employee’s family had been notified and the company’s primary focus was on providing all necessary support and assistance.
