Geos help shape the future at mine waste symposium first

The geoscience community is set to step into some of the big issues facing the transition to a low-carbon economy when it meets next month (February 6-7) at the Australian Mine Waste Symposium.

The symposium, held at the University of Queensland’s Global Change Institute, will address four themes including valorisation to sequestration, mining and reprocessing pathways, barriers to success and the future landscape.

Electric Mine Consortium mission to cut emissions

Key resource industry players have formed an Electric Mine Consortium to help decarbonise mine sites.

Fourteen companies including Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, Epiroc, South32, and Barminco have established the consortium to help reduce their scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions in line with global objectives.

The group, led by research organisation State of Play, describes electrification as a game changer for the mining industry as it drastically reduces emissions and exposure to diesel particulates underground, while bringing mine sites closer to achieving their zero emissions objectives.

Taylor outlines technology investment priorities

Hydrogen, energy storage and carbon capture and storage are key planks of the Federal Government's new Low Emissions Technology Statement.

Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor released the statement, described as the first milestone in Australia’s Technology Investment Roadmap.

It outlines five priority technologies and economic stretch goals to make new technologies as cost-effective as existing technologies. These are:

  • Hydrogen production under $2 per kilogram.
  • Long duration energy storage (6-8 hours or more) dispatched at less than $100 per MWh – this will enable reliable, firmed wind and solar at prices around. . .

Scheme to tackle emission reduction in supply chains

Major mining and gas players are among the Australian industry heavyweights signing up to scheme to work towards net zero emissions in supply chains.

BHP, Woodside, BlueScope Steel, BP Australia, Orica, APA Group, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group and Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers – which together represent 14 per cent of Australian industrial emissions – have signed on to the Australian Industry Energy Transitions Initiative.

New Cat underground loader a breath of fresh air

Meet the new Cat R2900 underground loader.

Powered by the fuel efficient Cat C15 engine, it offers configurations to meet the strictest diesel engine emissions standards.

The manufacturer says the R2900 continues to deliver the high performance and 17.2-tonne payload of its proven predecessor.

The 6-cylinder engine is turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled, and it produces 305 kW (409 hp) in standard configuration and 293 kW (393 hp) in EU Stage V compliant form.

Its uses the Cat Clean Emissions Module to limit particulate matter and NOx to near zero.
