Dredging work to begin at Weipa

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation will begin maintenance dredging at the Port of Weipa later this month.

NQBP chief executive officer Nicolas Fertin said the dredge vessel TSHD Brisbane would carry out the work.

“Maintenance dredging works are an integral part of port operations,” Mr Fertin said.

“In the same way we maintain roads and rail lines for freight transport, we need to look after our port infrastructure to keep trade flowing.

“The works are expected to start in late April and take up to four weeks to complete.”

Tough tool meets challenge of hitting rock bottom

Hall Contracting and Atlas Heavy Engineering have banded together to build one of the toughest marine digging buckets in the country.

The custom backhoe bucket weighs in at 17 tonnes and has been purpose designed for excavating hard rock.

Hall Contracting chief executive officer Cameron Hall said it had been manufactured for use on Hall’s 65m-long backhoe dredge, Woomera, which is currently tasked with widening the Clinton Channel at Port of Gladstone.
