Maas sheds building materials arm in $1.7bn deal

Heidelberg Materials Australia has entered a $1.703 billion deal to acquire the construction materials business of Maas Group Holdings (ASX:MGH).

The deal covers assets including 40 quarries with combined approved reserves of more than 350 million tonnes, 22 ready-mix concrete plants, two asphalt operations and one C&D recycling site.

It takes in associated businesses with capabilities in geotechnical services, machinery sales and hire, and earthmoving contracting. These include Regional Group Australia, CB, Austek Roads and Macquarie Geotech.

Liebherr launches latest luffing jib crane

Liebherr has unveiled its next generation luffing jib crane, hailing the 440 HC-L as a response to ever faster construction site cycles.

Following on from the 357 HC-L, the new release comes with improved performance values and is available in two versions: the 440 HC-L 12/24 and the 18/36.

The maximum lifting capacity of the 440 HC-L 18/36 is 36 tonnes. It has also been possible to raise the tower height of both crane versions by one tower section compared to the previous model.

Accommodation complex planned for Cairns Airport

MiHaven is developing a $60 million accommodation complex at the Cairns Airport, with construction set to start by the end of the year.

The SkyHaven serviced apartments are being developed by MiHaven subsidiary Tropical Airport Accommodation on 10,046sq m of land within the airport's business precinct.

With a projected opening in late 2026, MiHaven said the facility would include modern amenities, self-contained units, a cafe, gymnasium, conference and meeting facilities, swimming pools and easy access to airport terminals and associated facilities.

New $54m Browne Park redevelopment plans unveiled

The State Government has committed $54 million to the Browne Park redevelopment in Rockhampton as it unveils artist impressions of the new western grandstand and the full site masterplan of the stadium.

The government said its doubling of the initial election funding commitment made in 2020 accounted for significant escalations in building industry and supply chain issues, site challenges like water and sewerage upgrades, and the need to meet professional sport requirements to host games including NRL.

The procurement process for a head contractor will commence in the coming months.

Procurement tool attracts international interest

A procurement decision tool developed by QUT is set to go into wider use after the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) signed a licensing deal.

The OECD is using the tool on two major road projects in Norway with a view to promoting it as the Support Tool for Effective Procurement Strategy (STEPS) across its 38 member countries later this year.

Security of payment rollout under fire

The State Government is continuing to roll out its security of payment reforms for the construction industry amid Opposition accusations that it has been dragging its feet on the issue.

The reforms include a new Project Trust Account system to be progressively extended across Queensland’s $46 billion construction sector from March 2021, while other protections will commence this year.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni said the government was delivering $267 million in stimulus for the construction industry, and passing the latest reforms would help ensure the funds ended up in the pockets of Queensland tradies.

Green light for Idalia entertainment hub

Townsville City Council has given the green light for an entertainment precinct at the Fairfield Homemaker Centre, expected to create up to 200 jobs in construction.

It has approved a Material Change of Use application that paves the way for the development in Idalia.

The MCU is for a mixed-use entertainment development that will comprise of a rock-climbing facility, bowling alley and a cinema.

Green light for Calcium cattle complex

Townsville City Council has given the go-ahead for the development of a live cattle holding yard and feedlot facility on 195ha at Calcium.

Planning and Development Committee chair Les Walker said the Woodstock Pastoral Services development would have the capacity to accommodate 20,000 head of cattle.

The facility is proposed to be developed in four stages over a 10-year period from 2020 to 2029.

It will include of sheltered cattle receiving and handling yards, holding pens, a workshop and hardstand area, feed shed, offices and a weighbridge.

NAIF backing for hospital car park development

A $19.75 million NAIF loan has been approved towards Townsville Mater Private Hospital's ongoing redevelopment project.

The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility loan will fund construction of a 400-space, six-level car park to be built at the hospital’s Pimlico campus.

Project Trusts will be required on all $1 million-plus projects from July 2022 under construction industry reforms being rolled out by the Queensland Government.

Housing and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni today introduced legislation into Parliament aimed at increasing protections in Queensland’s building and construction industry.
