Ernest Henry to draw on $259m renewable energy project

APA Group will invest $259 million to build a 72MW solar farm and 52MW/104MWh battery energy storage system in Mount Isa, underpinned by a deal to supply Ernest Henry mining operations.

Construction of the Sybella Creek solar farm and BESS is expected to begin this year, with project completion planned by mid-2028.

APA Group announced a final investment decision on the project today.

The company said the related energy supply agreement (ESA) with Evolution Mining subsidiary Ernest Henry Mining ran until mid-2046.

Stanwell flicks the switch on Tarong Battery

Stanwell’s first wholly owned dispatchable energy storage project, the 300MW Tarong Battery, has started supplying electricity to the National Electricity Market (NEM)

The $514 million project, based at the Tarong power stations near Nanango, has been in construction since 2023.

The battery comprises 164 lithium-ion Tesla Megapacks and will boost Tarong power stations’ overall capacity to 2.1 GW.

With two-hour storage and dispatch capacity, it can store excess energy when supply is high and dispatch back into the grid when it is needed.

Milestone for CleanCo’s Swanbank Battery

The 250MW/500MWh Swanbank Battery has reached a key commissioning milestone, able to operate at full output and support Queensland’s electricity network while final regulatory and market approvals are completed.  

Located at the government-owned CleanCo’s Swanbank Energy Precinct in Ipswich, the grid-scale battery is one of the largest in Queensland

Japanese battery plans for Queensland graphite

Esmeralda mine developer Graphinex is joining forces with Idemitsu, Marubeni and NSC to build an Australia-Japan graphite supply chain for the battery sector.

The deal will see Graphinex advance development of its natural graphite projects in Queensland with support from Idemitsu.

This will link with Marubeni and NSC’s plans to establish a new downstream graphite anode manufacturing facility in Japan.

All systems ‘go’ for $150m Chinchilla battery

The $150 million Chinchilla battery is now fully operational at CS Energy's Kogan Creek power plant site on the Western Downs.

The installation has a discharge capacity of 100 megawatts and a storage capacity of 200 megawatt hours - enough to power 33,000 homes in the evening peak for two hours before needing to recharge.

CS Energy worked with Tesla and Downer to deliver the Chinchilla battery, which is the first operational project in the Kogan Clean Energy Hub.

Townsville battery factory proponent falls foul of the ASX

The ASX this morning suspended Magnis Energy Technologies from quotation stating a failure to comply with the listing rules which include periodic reporting.

The securities will remain suspended until the ASX was satisfied with the company’s compliance. 

On Wednesday, the company asked the ASX to be put into a trading halt pending the release of an announcement.

Initial report on battery fire near Rockhampton

The Bouldercombe battery project will be commissioned in a matter of weeks albeit at a reduced rate of storage.

One of the megapack units on the facility located near Rockhampton caught fire on the morning of 26 September at around 7:30. No-one was on site at the time of the incident.

Change of culture needed to staff the battery industry

Delegates to the Australian Battery Day conference have heard that the dearth of mechanical engineers taking up options in the industry has reached a low point.

It was now a matter of changing the culture. 

The Queensland University forum was told by QUT Faculty of Engineering lecturer Dr Veronica Gray that current engineering students and graduates had different values than other generations.

A David and Goliath battle summed up the current position of the industry at the second Australian Battery Day held at University of Queensland.  

The conference was told Australian manufacturers had to find a niche in an industry where China dominated world manufacturing and the US had made enormous financial commitments to scale up quickly.

Lithium Energy is working with the CSIRO to target the demands of the global lithium battery market with high-grade graphite from its Burke deposit, 125km north of Cloncurry.

The Burke graphite deposit in North West Queensland is one of the highest-grade graphite deposits globally, with aJORC Inferred Mineral Resource of 6.3Mt grading at 16 per cent total graphitic carbon (TGC).

Previous testwork has confirmed that the natural graphite there is able to be processed by standard flotation technology to international benchmark product categories for use in lithium-ion batteries.

Special status to drive battery metal plans forward

Queensland Pacific Metals' planned Townsville battery materials plant has won prescribed project status, as the company looks to begin construction as soon as 2022.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said the proposed Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) had the potential to provide a massive boost to Townsville and regional industry.

"The project will create around 800 construction jobs and its operational phase would create an estimated 1700 jobs, including 300 highly-skilled advanced manufacturing jobs at the facility and 1400 jobs in support industries," he said.
