Austroads spotlight on recycled plastics in asphalt

Touch of glass for Rocky road resealing

Rockhampton Regional Council is adding glass to the mix when it comes to local road resealing, with a trial underway on Murray St.

Councillor for Infrastructure Tony Williams said the asphalt for the project would include 5 per cent recycled glass – which equates to about 120,000 glass bottles.

“We’ve been working with Boral Australia for a few months now to make this happen and we are very excited to kick into our first trial," he said.

New specifications released for crack sealing

Austroads has published a new technical specification for the sealing of cracks in asphalt and spray seal pavements using hot placed elastomeric and crumb rubber sealants.

Austroads program manager Ross Guppy said the work was part of a comprehensive suite of specifications Austroads is producing for road and bridge construction.

"These standardised specifications will save time and money in the long term as industry adopts consistent contemporary practice on construction projects.” he said.

Bags of benefits in new asphalt product

First they perfected an asphalt formulation that recycles toner powder from binned cartridges to create longer lasting roads.

Now they have found a way to add plastic bags to the mix.

Melbourne-based resource recovery firm Close the Loop and their partners Downer plan an official launch this month for the new product, set to take many tonnes of plastic out of the waste stream.
