Hinchinbrook sites for aquaculture growth

Two new Hinchinbrook Shire sites have been earmarked as principal areas for the development of aquaculture ventures.

Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said identifying the new Aquaculture Development Areas (ADAs) cleared the way for the industry to grow.

Prawn farmer consolidates Proserpine footprint

Tassal Group has acquired an 800ha property neighbouring its Proserpine prawn farm and Billy Creek property.

The aquaculture company said the Mid Farm acquisition allowed it to successfully integrate its farm holdings to underpin future prawn production and this area would be known as the Proserpine farming precinct.

“Securing Mid Farm, which is located between our Proserpine farm and Billy Creek property, creates the potential to substantially improve operational aspects for the whole Proserpine farming precinct," Tassal managing director and chief executive officer Mark Ryan said.

Land deal paves way for major prawn farm expansion

Seafood company Tassal Group is buying a 1300ha property neighbouring its Proserpine prawn farm with an eye to further expansion.

The $7 million deal to buy Billy Creek is expected to pave the way for an enlarged prawn farming precinct in the area.

Tassal has already received regulatory approval for 450ha of prawn ponds at Proserpine.

It stocked prawn ponds of 270ha last financial year, with 340ha targeted for stocking in FY22.

Cash splash for tropical aquaculture plans

James Cook University has welcomed the State Opposition’s election commitment of $67 million for its proposed Tropical Aquaculture Accelerator.

It says the initiative is expected to support $2.6 billion in gross regional product and create more than 11,000 jobs by 2035.

The Accelerator, to be based at JCU’s Douglas campus, will combine the university’s expertise in aquaculture innovation, research and commercialisation with industry partners and world-leading, fit-for-purpose facilities.

The Mackay-Whitsunday region is building its standing as a major Australian aquaculture hub with $257 million of investment by Tassal Group set to create up to 1000 jobs.

Aquaculture potential highlighted

The aquaculture industry in northern Australian is about to hit its straps.

A recently released report forecasts a five-fold increase in production to more than $1.34 billion within the next decade.

That's in proportion to the current volume of fish, prawns and other seafood products.

The report has been written by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA), which found the growth would account for 2340 direct new jobs.

The research, led by James Cook University, comes with the twin caveats of overcoming challenges and capitalising on identified opportunities.

Boost for barra farm expansion plans

Expansion plans at a North Queensland barramundi farm are among 14 Queensland projects to attract Rural Economic Development (RED) grants of up to $250,000 for business growth.

Mainstream Aquaculture at Mourilyan Harbour is expanding to produce 3000 tonne of 4kg barramundi fish a year and develop a hub for production and processing.

Ag and jobs boosted in airport investment

Cairns has been selected as one of two regional sites for a multimillion-dollar investment to boost jobs in Far North Queensland and enhance the region’s reputation as an agricultural export hot spot. 

Air Freight Handling Services (AFHS) had been selected to establish a Regional Trade Distribution Centre (RTDC) in Cairns, with Toowoomba selected as the site for a second Centre, said Premier and Minister for Trade Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“This will supercharge rapid airfreight access for agricultural producers,” the Premier said.

Major expansion planned for Proserpine prawn farms

Tassal Group has acquired Exmoor Station in Central Queensland for about $25 million as it boosts aquaculture activities in the region.

The company also announced today that it plans to invest $85 million in expanding operations at Proserpine and on implementing Smart Farm initiatives at Mission Beach, Yamba and Proserpine farms.

It has launched a share placement to raise about $108 million to fast track the growth in its prawn farming business.

State help for $100m aquaculture project

A $100 million aquaculture project 40km north of Bowen has been granted prescribed project status by the Queensland Government.

Pacific Reef Fisheries proposes to construct 259 one-hectare aquaculture ponds, 1.5 metres deep on a total site area of about 768ha.

The prawn farm project will also include:

  • 11.3 ha seawater storage pond (370 mL storage capacity)
  • 47 ha discharge remediation area
  • intake and treated discharge water pipelines (approx. 5.5
    km long)

Rockhampton in line for aquaculture development

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow has welcomed the State Government’s focus on the region's potential for saltwater aquaculture development.

Casuarina Creek and Raglan Creek have been identified by the Department of Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries as being suitable for aquaculture projects.

Australia's largest aquaculture company plans to invest more than $30 million in rehabilitating and developing a prawn farm in Proserpine.

Tassal, which acquired the site in 2018, said local suppliers and contractors would be a key focus for the company.

A Burdekin Industry Breakfast on February 6 will highlight opportunities on the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade project and construction of a planned prawn farm.

Council keen to tap into aquaculture

A new lease of life could be in the pipeline for the West Rockhampton Treatment Plant, with the potential for it to be converted into an aquaculture precinct.

The WRTP has reached the end of its life and is currently being decommissioned, which means all waste flow will soon be diverted to the more effective South Rockhampton Sewage Treatment Plant.

The Rockhampton Regional Council has been working with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to determine potential sites in the region for aquaculture development and the council has identified the treatment plant as a possible location.
