Hastings Deering launches fresh apprentice intake

Mining and construction support company Hastings Deering will open applications for its 2022 apprenticeship intake on Monday (May 3), offering 40 new positions.

There are five trades on offer across nine Hastings Deering workshops including Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Mount Isa, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Darwin and Alice Springs.

They include engine reconditioner, auto electrician, boilermaker, diesel fitter and mechanical fitter.

Hastings Deering general manager-people and culture Vincent Cosgrove said the positions continued to be highly sought-after, with record application numbers year after year.

While last year Hastings Deering received a record 2695 applications for 40 positions, Mr Cosgrove said. . .

BMA is recruiting for 67 trainees in its Bowen Basin operations as it welcomes 60 new apprentices to the fold.

Hastings Deering has been swamped by a record 2695 applications for its 2021 apprentice intake after applications closed in July. 

The mining and construction support company opened applications for 40 positions in June for four weeks, with over 1000 applications in the first week alone.

The company logged a record year for its 2020 apprenticeships with figures up by 30 per cent on the intake applications for 2019. This year’s total even topped that by 26 per cent. 

The majority of applications, 595, were for Brisbane diesel fitter roles, followed by 300 for an auto electrician apprenticeship in. . .

Coal terminal offers trade opportunities

Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal is looking for new electrical and mechanical fitter apprentices to start in 2021.

Each year, DBCT hosts six new workers as part of the apprenticeship program, which runs over four years.

Applications for the 2021 intake close on July 5.

Chief executive officer Steve Rae said he was hoping for a diverse applicant pool and encouraged people to apply if they wanted a career in the electrical or mechanical fitter trades.

Power generator Stanwell is recruiting for apprentices at its Tarong complex in the South Burnett region.

Stanwell general manager generation Brad Perry said the company's Apprentice and Trainee Program offered opportunities for local people of all ages and experience to learn new skills.

Glencore scouting for next batch of apprentices

Next generation ready to start trades with BMA

Sixty two people have received offers to commence apprenticeships with BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in 2020.

BMA asset president James Palmer said the number of apprenticeships being offered to Central Queenslanders was the highest in several years.

“We want our workforce to reflect the communities in which we operate, so it’s pleasing to be able to build on that with our diverse apprenticeship intake next year.” he said.
