Gladstone refinery in $1.2m hydrogen study

Rio Tinto will look into using renewable hydrogen to power a key process at its Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone in a $1.2 million study.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will contribute up to $579,786 towards the feasibility study.

Conventional alumina refining combusts natural gas to achieve the high temperatures necessary in the calcination process.

Rio Tinto will investigate the technical implications of displacing that natural gas with renewable hydrogen at the Yarwun plant.

One aspect of the study will see the company simulate the calcination process using a lab scale reactor at its Bundoora Technical Development. . .

Water-wise moves cut refinery consumption

Yarwun alumina refinery near Gladstone has reduced its raw water consumption by 30 per cent over the last five years.

Owner Rio Tinto said the refinery had reduced raw water consumption from 28,000 cubic metres to 20,000 cubic metres per day.  

General manager Mark Gilmore said the achievement was part of Yarwun’s ongoing work to operate in a way that was not only safe for employees, contractors and the community, but also better for the environment.

Gladstone refineries in $75m overhaul projects

Rio Tinto’s two Gladstone alumina refineries have $75 million of planned maintenance shutdown work underway, in a boost for the local economy.

The 2020 shutdowns at the Queensland Alumina Ltd (QAL) and Yarwun refineries have seen up to 500 additional specialised contractors working at the sites in recent months. 

The company says the projects are providing significant economic benefits for the Gladstone region, including local spend with labour-hire firms, transport and vehicle-hire businesses, maintenance workshops and accommodation suppliers.

Strong maiden resource for Abercorn kaolin project

Industrial metal developer Metalsearch has announced a maiden mineral resource for its Abercorn project, about 135km south of Gladstone.

The total resource at the kaolin prospect is 39.06 million tonnes yielding 36.8 per cent -20µm fraction grading 28.6 per cent alumina and 1.18 per cent potassium oxide.

About 60 per cent of that resource is classified as indicated and it remains open in all directions, with less than 10 per cent of the project area having been drilled.

Metalsearch expects to report a maiden mineral resource for its Abercorn project 'in the near future' after results from the final 34 holes in a recent 62-hole aircore drilling program.

The drilling campaign had demonstrated that the Abercorn project contained significant scale and a very consistent, high quality grade of mineralisation, Metalsearch said.

The project, about 135km south of Gladstone, is described as a large-scale kaolin prospect with potential to underpin the production of high-purity alumina (HPA), aluminium sulfate (ALUM) and synthetic zeolite.

Abercorn project delivers for Metalsearch

Metalsearch says it is continuing to receive consistent high-grade intersections of good quality kaolin at its Abercorn project , about 135km south of Gladstone.

Abercorn is described as a large-scale kaolin prospect with potential to underpin the production of high-purity alumina (HPA), aluminium sulfate (ALUM) and synthetic zeolite. 

Metalsearch completed a 62-hole aircore drilling program at the project last quarter, ranging in depth from 23m to 51m.

Results have been received for 28 holes to date, showing an average of almost 30 per cent aluminium oxide.

Gladstone earmarked for $200m alumina plant

Gladstone has been chosen as the site for a $200 million high-purity alumina industrial plant.

The HPA First Project would take reagents via pipeline from the local Orica plant and sell back by-product under an agreement announced yesterday.

State Development Minister Cameron Dick said Gladstone had been selected as the location for the Alpha HPA plant over potential sites in Newcastle, New South Wales and Kwinana, Western Australia.
