Latest data shows annual exploration growth

Mineral exploration expenditure lifted significantly in Queensland last financial year, the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies says.

But AMEC has raised concerns about the impact of tight border restrictions on more recent activity in the state.

The total exploration spend in Queensland (other than petroleum) hit $403.4 million in 2019/20 compared to $313.4 million the previous year, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

The figures also showed total Queensland exploration expenditure in the June 2020 quarter (other than petroleum) was $105.2 million, up on the March quarter ($81.2 million).

‘Tough day’ for Australia as ABS reveals COVID-19 job toll

Almost 600,000 people in Australia lost their jobs between March and April, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Reacting to the news, Prime Minister Scott Morrison described it as 'a tough day for Australia'.

"Almost 600,000 jobs have been lost, every one of them devastating for those Australians, for their families, for their communities," he said.

"A very tough day. Terribly shocking, although not unanticipated. We knew there would be hard news as the pandemic wreaks an impact on Australia as it is on countries all around the world."
