Abbot Point competition coverage clash

The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) has called for further submissions on the request by northern Bowen Basin miner QCoal for a declaration over the Abbot Point coal handling facility north of Bowen.

The declaration allows the QCA both to regulate access to the service, including its terms and conditions and to resolve disputes related to access.

The issue has raised its head as QCoal is one of the first contracts to come up for reassessment since Adani took over a 99-year lease on June 1, 2011.

Katter call for tighter controls on port owners

Katter’s Australian Party founder Bob Katter says the push by Coalition MPs to impose tighter controls on the half-Chinese owned Newcastle Port should be extended to include Abbot Point in Central Queensland. 

The Federal Member for Kennedy said the Adani-run coal port near Bowen should have the same circuit-breaker protections applied to protect the coal exporters from being exploited by foreign port owners.

LNP enters space race with $15m pledge for CQ launch site

An LNP Government would build a rocket launch site near Abbot Point to help the Queensland space industry lift off, State Opposition leader Deb Frecklington said.

The proposed $15 million investment to construct a government-owned orbital rocket launch site is forecast to create 300 jobs – 100 jobs in construction and 200 secure jobs when anchor tenant Gilmour Space Technologies operates monthly launches.

The LNP says the rocket launch site will be used by companies to send satellites and other cargo into orbit.

New rail company recruiting for Bowen haulage business

A new rail business is launching in Bowen with a focus on providing haulage services to the Abbot Point export terminal.

Bowen Rail Company head of project delivery David Wassell said the company had purchased its own state-of-the-art locomotives and rollingstock. The first four locomotives are due to arrive in 2021.

“We are an innovative new business and we plan to use leading technology to efficiently transport resources from Queensland mines for export,” Mr Wassell said.

Adani's Abbot Point Operations near Bowen has set a new record for coal shipped through Australia’s most northerly coal port in a 12 month period.

Adani Infrastructure chief executive officer Trista Brohier said a total of 32,036,065 tonnes of coal from Queensland mines passed through the Port of Abbot Point in the 12 months to the end of March – breaking the previous record by 3.2 million tonnes.

Adani makes headway on Abbot Point upgrades

Adani is continuing major infrastructure upgrades at its Abbot Point Operations near Bowen, with a focus on controlling stormwater run-off.

A considerable number of work packages were either completed or currently underway to improve water and environmental management as part of a three-year upgrade program, an Abbot Point Operations spokeswoman said.

She said more than $15 million worth of projects had been delivered over the past two years.
