Suzana shares strategy in taking the lead

People do not have to come from a traditional mining technical background to be a successful leader in the industry, says Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu partner Suzana Vlahovic. Ms Vlahovic is among the presenters at The AusIMM New Leaders' Conference 2018 in Sydney, September 24-25. This year the conference theme is ‘Building our future on the foundations of history’. Conference organisers say the program aims to develop students' and graduates' mindsets to better deal with complex developments, integrate and understand emerging technology, and to be able to effectively network with others. Ms Vlahovic (right) is a mining and resources industry specialist with more than 17 years’ experience serving companies in the sector. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand as well as being a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM). Ms Vlahovic answered some questions in the lead-up to the New Leaders conference, where she is due to present in Session 3: career growth and progression: 1. What was one of the biggest challenges you have faced when you started in the resources industry? "When I first started my career as a graduate auditor, I had very little knowledge of the operations of a mine. Now, 17 years later, I have had the privilege of working with some of the biggest mining companies in the world, delivering accounting and advisory services. What started as a big challenge for me actually became the foundation of my career." 2. What do you hope delegates will get out of your session? "A clear understanding that you do not have to come from a traditional mining technical background to be a successful leader in the industry. I also want to inspire and energise delegates to be confident leaders and to seize all opportunities every chance you get." 3. What advice would you give to a professional or a graduate starting out in the industry? "The industry is small, so start to build your network early and get involved. There are fabulous organisations that support new leaders like the AusIMM’s NSW Women in Mining network, which represents the interests of women and provides great networking opportunities through networking events.
