State backs $32m Delorean bioenergy project

Delorean Corporation has attracted a $5 million state grant to support its plans to build a $32 million bioenergy plant in South-East Queensland. Delorean’s proposed QLD1 facility would divert organic waste from landfill and other low-value pathways to produce fertiliser, renewable electricity, heat and renewable gas using in-vessel anaerobic digestion technology. The company said the plant would be capable of producing up to 16 gigawatt hours (GWh) per annum of renewable electricity, about 185 terajoules (TJ) per annum of renewable natural gas, or a combination of both. It will also produce 59,000 tonnes per annum of fertiliser for the agricultural industry. Delorean managing director Joe Oliver said the company hoped to roll out further Queensland plants after QLD1, which is expected to be under construction later this year and in operation by mid-2026. The state grant for QLD1 is being provided under Queensland’s Resource Recovery Industry Development Program, which supports projects and initiatives that divert waste from landfill, reduce stockpiling and create jobs. "We recognise that there's a huge volume of organic waste in the market and putting it into landfill isn't the best use of that waste," Mr Oliver said. "And people need to understand that, in a lot of cases, waste isn't waste. We have to reuse that material to get the best out of it. Putting it into landfill doesn't capture the nutrients and in a lot of cases doesn't capture the energy that it has available as well. "So what we are really focused on is breaking that organic waste down that has captured the CO2 from the atmosphere and using it to offset fossil fuel. "That's the focus and we are looking at multiple facilities. We see it as a national rollout of bioenergy facilities across Australia." The QLD1 project is the fourth project in Delorean’s build/own/operate bioenergy project pipeline along with its two shovel-ready projects SA1 and VIC1, and collaborative NSW1 development project with Brickworks. The QLD1 project is in the planning and development phase. Subject to conditions precedent, the State Government grant will be available on or before December 31 this year and must be used by December 30, 2028. Delorean said it was working on structural project finance options to provide the necessary investment for project construction. "We thank the Queensland Government for their commitment to the QLD1 project and look forward to successfully delivering this project as an additional plank in our rollout of Delorean-owned and operated bioenergy infrastructure,” Mr Oliver said.
