Senex drills into recycling opportunities

A Senex Energy project to minimise waste in its drilling operations has seen it join the winners' ranks at the Australian Energy Producers Excellence Awards this week. The company took out the Environment Project Excellence Award for its 'Circular Economy Solutions in the Drilling Lifecycle' initiative. This sees Senex reusing, refurbishing, and recycling steel tubing joints and rods during regular workover operations as well as recycling high-density polyethylene parts. The company said partnerships with COHO Resources and Oilfield Piping Systems were central to its efforts. Senex conducts its own onsite inspections of steel tubing joints and rods. Those that don't pass go to COHO and OPS for offsite inspections to determine the potential for reuse. The company said COHO determined whether the tubing joints could be reused in workovers and the plug and abandoning of wells. In 2023, the partnership with COHO meant Senex was able to reuse 13.8 per cent of tubing joints for workovers and plug and abandonment and 42.9 per cent were repurposed by farmers for fencing. OPS offers refurbishment services for damaged rods. During 2023, 91 per cent of rods were identified by OPS as suitable for refurbishment, with only 9 per cent scrapped. Senex also partners with Outback Contractors to facilitate the recycling of HPDE waste, particularly extensive thread protector waste (see image above). They remove the HDPE waste from drill sites to their Roma facility, where it is melted down into square blocks which are further processed in Brisbane to be used in items including garden furniture and bus benches. The Australian Energy Producers Excellence Awards were announced in Perth this week during the 2024 Australian Energy Producers Conference & Exhibition. Other winners included: Safety Project Excellence Award - The Chevron Australia ‘Be an Upstander’ and ‘Stand Up to Bullying’ programs won this individual award category and earned Chevron the Chair's Award. Workforce Development Excellence Award -This award went to Santos for its ‘Healthier Me - Helping you live well and work well’ program to improve the health of staff. It includes free on-site and telehealth GP services, mental and respiratory health support, a customised health digital portal for staff to discuss health, a nine-day fortnight, and field-based health checks by GPs. Community Development Excellence - Shell Australia took out the award for its Indigenous Scholarships Program, which supports First Nations peoples to undertake pathways to employment, increasing educational opportunities for Indigenous people within Shell QGC’s operational footprint in Queensland. Australian Energy Producers Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch congratulated all the entrants for contributing to their organisations and communities. “With so many entrants this year, the winners and finalists should know they are the pick of an extraordinary collection of initiatives by our member companies to support our workforce and the local communities in which we operate,” she said.
