Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker (pictured above) has announced that she will not contest the local government elections in March 2024. As leader of Australia's largest resource region, Cr Baker counts her achievements as including saving Glenden from demolition, successfully lobbying for a new hospital and securing more than $120 million in funding for local communities. “After nearly 17 years representing the Isaac region, and the last 12 of those as Mayor, I have made the decision to retire from council,” Cr Baker said. “It has been a wild ride and I have put my heart and soul in to fighting for Isaac, getting up every day to do my best for the community I love." Mayor Paul McVeigh has announced that he will not be contesting the election for Mayor of the Western Downs Regional Council at the 2024 local government election. Western Downs Regional Council chief executive officer Jodie Taylor (pictured right with the Mayor) said Cr McVeigh had worked tirelessly over the past two terms to ensure economic stability and diversity on the Western Downs and had championed legacy projects and infrastructure to strengthen and improve the liveability of the region. "We like to say 'it’s the people that make it' here on the Western Downs, and this statement couldn't be truer for a man like Cr McVeigh, who, aside from his unwavering commitment to his role as Mayor, is an exceptional person with a heart of gold," she said. C29 Metals has started drilling at its Mayfield copper-gold project in north-west Queensland, with local drillers AED set to carry out a 2800m RC program. The company said the eight-hole program was designed to test the best targets generated from extensive geochemical and geophysics data at four prospects across the 91sq km Mayfield tenure. Komatsu has acquired Brisbane-based iVolve, a company providing fleet management systems for the mining and quarry industry. “Australia is renowned as a global centre of excellence for mining, quarrying and construction technology," Komatsu Australia chief executive officer Sean Taylor said. "This acquisition will provide global scale for iVolve and enable the ongoing development of iVolve’s products and solutions into the future.” Atlas Copco Group has completed the acquisition of Sykes Group from Seven Group Holdings. (The purchase price is not disclosed.) Sykes is a global manufacturer of dewatering pumps, predominantly used for transferring water with solids and abrasive nature within the mining and wastewater sectors. Position Partners is rebranding as Aptella from the end of January. Position Partners provides positioning and machine control solutions for surveying, civil contracting, earthmoving, mining and building activities. “The Position Partners name and brand has served us well,” chief executive officer Martin Nix said. “Sentiment from our employees and customers was that the time was right for a fresh new identity to better represent the experiences people can expect from us as their vital technology provider.” Budget airline Bonza's inaugural flight from the Gold Coast to Mount Isa touched down on Tuesday this week. Bonza chief executive officer and founder Tim Jordan expressed gratitude for the support from Mount Isa City Council and Queensland Airports Limited to kick off the new route. Mount Isa City Council said Bonza was set to operate two flights per week between Mount Isa and the Gold Coast, on Tuesdays and Fridays, in a development that promised to bring positive economic and social impacts to the region. “The collaboration between Bonza, Mount Isa City Council, and Queensland Airports Limited reflects a shared vision to make air travel more accessible by offering affordable airfares," Mayor Danielle Slade said. "It will facilitate connecting with loved ones, allowing families to visit each other more easily. Additionally, it will enhance affordability for tourists interested in exploring Mount Isa, ultimately making our city more desirable and liveable.”
