Piles of progress on Cairns Southern Access project

Eighty-eight concrete piles, measuring up to 24m in length, form part of a new bridge being built in the latest Cairns Southern Access Corridor upgrade. The bridge is being built at Woree for the $104 million project, which will see the Bruce Highway widened from four lanes to six between Kate and Aumuller streets. The piles are manufactured in Cairns by Rocla and are being transported by Bells Transport to site, where Wagstaff Piling is installing them. Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey inspected progress on the project with Member for Cairns Michael Healy. “This is about backing Cairns, local industry and businesses,” Mr Bailey said. “We’re creating a solid foundation for a better road to the Queensland Government’s $127 million port upgrade, which is securing new opportunities for tourism and industry in the far north.” The construction project is expected to support more than 110 local jobs. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said this project was part of the Australian Government’s $840 million-plus commitment to upgrading the Cairns Southern Access Corridor, including the recently announced $180 million for Stage 5 upgrades. Georgiou Koppen Joint Venture has the construction contract for the Stage 4 works now underway. The project scope includes constructing additional lanes to widen the Bruce Highway from to six lanes from Links Drive through to Aumuller St, near the Port of Cairns and wharf precinct It also involves removing and replacing the northbound bridge at Chinaman Creek and widening the southbound bridge to three lanes, upgrading the Lyons St and Aumuller St intersections, and installing an off-road shared pathway for cyclists and pedestrians.
