Official opening celebrates ‘gold medal’ expansion

An official opening event has celebrated completion of a three-year expansion project to make North Queensland's Ravenswood Gold operation the largest gold mine in Queensland. Resources Minister Scott Stewart congratulated Ravenswood Gold on the expansion works, which give the mine capacity to ramp up production to more than 200,000 ounces of gold a year until at least 2032. Related: Golden days as $450m expansion project winds up “Not only is this now the largest gold mine in Queensland, but the Ravenswood Gold project also deserves a gold medal for how it supports locals and local businesses,” Mr Stewart said. “It is providing good jobs, flow-on benefits for local businesses and is ensuring a sustainable future for the town of Ravenswood well beyond the life of the mine. “And all Queenslanders benefit with royalties that will fund our schools, hospitals and roads." Ravenswood Gold chief executive officer Brett Fletcher said the Ravenswood team, with local specialists and regional businesses, worked together to deliver the expansion project safely and efficiently. “We are proud to have completed the planned expansion project, making a huge contribution to the local and regional economy. And I am incredibly proud of the Ravenswood Gold team,” he said. Located in the historical gold mining town of Ravenswood, 90km east of Charters Towers, the mine has been in operation since 1987 and was purchased by Ravenswood Gold in April 2020. Ravenswood Gold is a private company jointly owned by EMR Capital and Golden Energy and Resources. Mr Stewart said more than 1000 contractors were supported during the mine’s expansion, while its permanent workforce had increased to more than 430, with a further 220 permanent contractors. Measures to expand the mine and processing plant included purchasing a new mining fleet and constructing a new crusher circuit, mill, leaching tanks and tailings storage facility. About 120 guests attended the opening on Wednesday. In addition to Mr Stewart, guest speakers included Birriah elder Karen Dodd, Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, Charters Towers Mayor Frank Beveridge, Ravenswood State School Principal Katee Wakefield, the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Siswo Pramono, EMR Capital executive chairman Owen Hegarty and Golden Energy and Resources executive director and group chief executive officer Dwi Prasetyo Suseno.
