National recognition for landfill gas-to-power project

Gladstone Regional Council's Benaraby Landfill Gas-to-Power Project has been named as a 2017 National Awards for Local Government category winner. It is now in the running for the 2017 National Award for Excellence in Local Government, which will be announced on June 20. Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett was rapt with the award and hoped there would be a bigger one to follow when the major award is announced at the Australian Local Government Association National General Assembly Dinner at the National Convention Centre in Canberra. "The benchmark Benaraby Landfill Gas-to-Power Project, which enables gas generated at Benaraby Landfill to be extracted and converted into green power, obviously impressed the awards judging committee and council is proud to have gained such recognition," Cr Burnett said. "Not only does the innovative project boost the region's energy infrastructure and productivity while reducing environmental risks associated with the generation of landfill gas, it also caters for the inclusion of an adjacent solar plant in the near future, creating an Australian-first green energy hub. "There are a number of excellent projects which were recognised with awards across the 10 categories, but the gas-to-power project is a one-of-a-kind and council is very confident that it will figure strongly in the considerations for the major award. "The gas-to-power project has already delivered a number of positive outcomes to the region including minimising environmental risk associated with land gas, reducing landfill greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 per cent, and abating more than 150,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence." The 2017 National Award for Excellence in Local Government category winners are: Tasmania's Meander Valley Council for its Valley Central Industrial Precinct, Westbury, Tasmaniaproject, in the Contributing to Regional Growth category; Victoria's Southern Grampians Shire Council for its Digital Transformation of a rural community—a journey project,in the Digital Innovation in Local Government category; Western Australia's Shire of Kalamunda for its Youth Employment project,in the Youth Economic Participation category; Queensland's Gladstone Regional Council for its Waste Powering Gladstone's Greener Future: The Benaraby Landfill Gas-to-Power Project, in the Boosting Productivity through Infrastructure category; South Australia's Coorong District Council for its Creating Coonalpyn projectin the Arts Animates—excellence in the capacity building and innovation category; Queensland's Brisbane City Council for its Brisbane Access and Inclusion Plan 2012—2017 Implementation project, in the Disability Access and Inclusion category; South Australia's City of West Torrens for its Summer Festival project in the Multicultural Australia—Strength in Diversity category; Queensland's Logan City Council for its Flooded Road Smart Warning System project, in the Excellence in Road Safety category; Victoria's Wyndham City Council for its WynLens—Visualization, Analysis and Modelling of Holographic City project, in the Innovation to Create More Liveable Australian Cities category; and New South Wales' Sutherland Shire Council for its Ngnamapa Kililpil: OUR STARS project, in the Promoting Indigenous Recognition category.
