Mine honours pair with permanent memorial

A permanent memorial garden dedicated to Trevor Davis and Dylan Langridge is being officially opened by their families at the Dugald River mine site today.

MMG Dugald River general manager Tim Akroyd said the team had been deeply affected by the deaths of their colleagues on February 15 last year.

“The loss of Dylan and Trevor has had a profound impact on all of us at Dugald River and the memorial provides an opportunity to recognise and remember them,” he said

“Our thoughts are with Dylan and Trevor’s families at this time.”

A site-wide memorial service is planned for this afternoon, with arrangements made for employees to finish their shift early to attend.

Mr Langridge and Mr Davis were fatally injured after ground gave way due to a void in a mine stope at the underground zinc mine.

The bodies of the two Barminco employees were recovered the next day after rescuers made their way through rubble around the pair’s light vehicle, located in an area about 125m underground.

A drilling rig also fell down the stope, but that operator survived and raised the alarm.

Early findings by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) pointed to the void being caused by bogging operations on the level below the area where the light vehicle and drill rig had been operating.

‘It is unknown at this stage why those bogging operations were being carried out,’ a report at the time stated.

RSHQ has completed its investigation into the incident.

The mining safety watchdog presented a brief of evidence to the Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor late last year.
