Memorial planned for Dugald River miners

MMG is preparing a memorial for two miners who died underground when a roof collapsed at Dugald River mine in north west Queensland earlier this year. The deaths of Dylan Langridge and Trevor Davis are fresh in many minds as Mount Isa hosts Queensland’s Miners Memorial Day service today (19Sept23). The 2023 Miners Memorial Day Service has been held at the Mount Isa Civic Centre this morning . Today’s date is the anniversary of the state’s worst coal mining disaster at Mount Mulligan in Far North Queensland, where 75 miners lost their lives in 1921. MMG is sending a delegation from the mine to attend the commemoration which will include Jumbo operator Steven Poznik who was a co-worker with Mr Landbridge and Mr Davis. It was the responsibility of older miners to pass on their experience to the new generation, Mr Poznik said. “I think we're all aware of the hazards in this sort of environment,” he said. “Most mine sites have had significant losses and we speak about those with the new up and coming miners so they're aware of the hazards and the history behind it all. “And we hope we can teach that generation that they've got to be vigilant around these circumstances.” Related: Queensland’s sad history of mine deaths More than $60,000 has been raised for the families of the dead miners through the Miner’s Promise charity. That includes proceeds from the sale of more than 2000 T-Shirts from Mr Poznik’s online graphic design and merchandise business ‘Dirty Hole Designs.’ Steve Poznik driving a Jumbo He was looking forward to some more detail about the memorial to be built at Dugald River he said. “Like any industry, there's always hazards in the workplace. Safety culture is pretty prevalent in mining, so I don't feel like it's an unsafe industry. “I think knowing that the person next to you is part of your family and treating them like they are, you'd do anything, make sure your family safe,” he said. “I think it sort of hits home. “It sounds like a memorial that will be built on site to commemorate the two boys. I believe the unveiling of that will be on the one year anniversary.”
