Kidston project connects on ground and under

Contractors have been busy at the new Kidston renewable energy site in north Queensland. Timely progress has been made on civil, electrical and mechanical sections of the project. Kidston is a 250MW Pumped Storage Hydro Project located in Etheridge Shire in Queensland’s gulf country. It reported that construction activities, led by Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) joint venture of McConnell Dowell and John Holland continue to progress to schedule. They include dam construction, underground and waterway civil works and the full powerhouse fit-out, including supply and installation of all electromechanical equipment. In the three months to February contractors have completed, the Main Access Tunnel (MAT) portal face stabilisation The MAT will ultimately provide access to the main powerhouse cavern. They’ve also ticked off the 22kV distribution line with the line energised for 4MVA. Generators have been removed and the site is operating on permanent power . Civil works include completion of the trial for the Wises Dam embankment. The Wises Dam construction is scheduled to start next month (April) with the end of the wet season. They’ve also completed the road upgrade to the Guybel Munyan (Mt Fox) substation as part of Powerlink’s 257kV transmission line. He was satisfied with the pace of construction said Genex CEO James Harding. The Kidston Clean Energy Hub is comprised of the operating 50MW stage 1 Solar Project (KS1) and the 250MW Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project (K2-Hydro) with potential for further multi-stage wind and solar projects. Genex’s first battery energy storage system, the 50MW/100MWh Bouldercombe Battery Project (BBP) located in Central Queensland achieved contractual close in February 2022 and is scheduled to commence operation in mid CY2023.
